Shiny Pokemon can be encountered in a variety of ways – catching a wild Pokemon, hatching an egg, or defeating a Team Go Rocket Grunt or Leader. Some Pokemon are only available during specific events, such as Go Fest, or set periods, such as with Meltan.

Shiny Pokemon appear on the map as regular Pokemon, meaning there is no way of knowing beforehand if the Pokemon you are about to encounter will be regular or shiny. Therefore, without checking every Pokemon, you won’t ever know which one could be shiny.

For a wild Pokemon, the odds appear to be around a 1 in 500 chance of encountering a Shiny Pokemon, however, a few Pokemon do seem to have a boosted Shiny rate of around 1 in 125, including Gible, Shinx, and Glarian Stunfisk. These Pokemon are rarer to locate within the wild, but when you do, the chances of it being shiny are increased.

Some Pokemon have a permanently increased Shiny Spawn Rate, with the odds being 1 in 62.5. They rarely spawn in the wild, so when you do find one, be sure to check. These include, and are not limited to the following:

  • Baby Pokemon – most likely from eggs – Togepi, Mime Jr, and Happiny
  • Rare Wild Spawn Pokemon – for example, Farfetch’d, Bronzor and Sneasel
  • Mega Raid Pokemon – for example Charizard, Blastoise
  • Shadow Pokemon already available as a Shiny Pokemon

Legendary Pokemon are even more special. When you encounter a Legendary Pokemon, the odds dramatically increase to a 1 in 20 chance!

During specific events, such as a Community Day, the Pokemon Go Shiny Spawn Rate odds increase beyond the usual 1 in 500 or 1 in 125 chance, to 1 in 25, making those occasions the perfect time to Shiny hunt.

Go Fest always features a new Shiny Pokemon too, so it’s worth checking during the event, and for ticket holders, the odds for the duration of the event appear to be even higher still for wild spawns.

One of the trickier Pokemon to find regardless of any event or in the wild, is Ditto! Ditto has appeared as a Shiny Pokemon during 2 events to date, one of which was paid for, and the other in 2023 during a Special Event. If you find a Shiny Ditto, be sure to hold onto it, as we don’t know when, or if, Shiny Ditto will return.

And there we have it, the Pokemon Go Shiny Spawn Rate odds. Which Pokemon is your favorite Shiny, or who would you like to see as Shiny Pokemon? Be sure to let us know in the comments.
