Grappling Hook in Valheim is unlocked by finding a Hook inside a Dvergr Treasure Chest in the Mistlands, then crafting the finished tool with 1 Hook, 4 Mandibles, 10 Refined Eitr and 10 Yggdrasil Wood. It was added with version 1.0 and becomes extremely useful for the vertical dungeons and structures that lead through the Deep North.
Where to find the Hook
The hardest part of getting the Grappling Hook in Valheim is the one material literally called Hook. It is found in Dvergr Treasure Chests inside Infested Mines in the Mistlands.
Explore the dungeon carefully rather than running straight through its obvious rooms. Hidden stone doors marked with glowing blue symbols can lead to concealed areas containing Dvergr chests.
A Hook is not guaranteed in every mine, so you may need to clear several. The recipe unlocks when your character physically picks up the Hook.
Grappling Hook recipe
Once the Hook has been found, the Grappling Hook in Valheim requires 1 Hook, 4 Mandibles, 10 Refined Eitr and 10 Yggdrasil Wood.
Mandibles come from Seeker Soldiers. Yggdrasil Wood comes from Yggdrasil Shoots in the Mistlands and requires a sufficiently strong axe. Refined Eitr is produced from Sap and Soft Tissue through the Mistlands refining chain.
Craft the finished tool at the Black Forge once the recipe appears.

How to use the Grappling Hook
Equip the Grappling Hook in Valheim and aim at a wall, cliff, structure or other suitable surface. Firing launches the hook after a brief wind-up and pulls you toward the anchor point.
Once attached, use the jump control to pull yourself further toward the hook. Right-click releases the line.
Practice somewhere safe before relying on it over a lethal drop. The short delay between shots means a missed hook cannot always be corrected instantly.
Is the Grappling Hook found in the Deep North?
No. The Grappling Hook in Valheim is a Mistlands progression item even though many players first hear about it while preparing for version 1.0’s final biome.
That means a returning endgame character can collect it before sailing north at all.
That distinction matters because waiting to find one in the Deep North can waste hours. The Hook material comes from Infested Mines, and the other crafting materials are also Mistlands resources.
Ideally, craft it before beginning serious Deep North exploration.
Why you need it for Winding Tunnels
Winding Tunnels are one of the first important Deep North dungeons because they contain Frostcores and moulds used for the new crafting chain.
Their layouts can include deep shafts and vertical spaces that are much easier to leave with the Grappling Hook in Valheim.
The hook does not unlock the Winding Tunnels and is not consumed there. It simply turns awkward vertical navigation into something manageable instead of forcing you to improvise ramps and jumps.
Why it matters for Mörkhalla
Mörkhalla structures are tall and do not offer a simple ground-level front door. Reaching the upper access and then working down into the structure is part of the progression.
The Grappling Hook in Valheim is one of the cleanest ways to reach those elevated sections. After entering, it also makes the eventual climb back out much less painful.
That becomes important because Deep North progression requires several Mörkhalla clears rather than one sightseeing trip.
Does the Grappling Hook replace normal climbing?
No. It is a traversal tool, not free flight. You still need to aim properly, manage the delay between uses and choose surfaces the hook can reach.
It also occupies your hands while equipped, so switch back to a weapon before deliberately pulling yourself into a room full of enemies.
The Grappling Hook in Valheim works best as part of your normal exploration kit rather than something you keep equipped throughout combat.
When should you craft it?
Craft it as soon as your Mistlands progression gives you the Hook and materials. You do not need to wait until after Fader or until your first Deep North landing.
That makes the Grappling Hook in Valheim an excellent piece of 1.0 preparation: obtain it while finishing Mistlands content, practice using it safely, then take it north when Winding Tunnels and Mörkhalla turn vertical movement into part of the endgame progression.
