God Of War Laufey gameplay was one of the biggest talking points following PlayStation State Of Play June 2026. While Sony stopped short of confirming a release date, the reveal trailer provided a surprisingly detailed look at how the next chapter in the franchise will play.

For the first time in a mainline God Of War game, players will step into the role of Laufey, also known as Faye, with Santa Monica Studio introducing a faster combat system, new abilities and an entirely different style of gameplay compared to Kratos.

Here’s everything we learned about God Of War Laufey gameplay from the reveal.

God Of War Laufey Gameplay Is Faster Than Recent Games

One of the first things fans noticed from the reveal trailer was the pace of combat.

Recent God Of War games have focused heavily on powerful attacks, weighty weapons and methodical combat encounters. God Of War Laufey appears to take a different approach.

Faye moves quickly around the battlefield, uses agile attacks and spends far more time airborne than Kratos ever did. Several moments shown during the reveal featured rapid movement, aerial combos and fast dodges that immediately set the game apart from God Of War Ragnarök.

The result looks much closer to the faster style seen in earlier entries while still retaining the cinematic presentation of the modern games.

Faye Uses A Sword Instead Of The Leviathan Axe

Another major gameplay change comes from Faye’s weapon choice.

Rather than wielding the Leviathan Axe or Blades of Chaos, Laufey primarily fights using a sword.

The weapon appears to support quick attacks, combo chains and fluid movement, giving combat a noticeably different rhythm compared to Kratos.

While Sony has not revealed every weapon available in the game, the sword was heavily featured throughout the trailer and appears to be central to Faye’s combat style.

The Golden Hand Of The Jötnar Could Change Combat Completely

Perhaps the most interesting mechanic revealed so far is the Golden Hand Of The Jötnar.

According to Sony, this ability allows Laufey to separate an enemy’s soul from its body during combat.

Once extracted, these souls can then be used as part of battles, adding an entirely new layer to encounters.

At the moment, Santa Monica Studio has not fully explained how the system works, but it already looks like one of the most unique abilities introduced in the franchise for years.

Many fans have already begun comparing it to the magical powers seen in other action RPGs, although it remains distinctly tied to the mythology of God Of War.

The Everywhen Opens Up New Gameplay Possibilities

The setting itself could have a major impact on gameplay.

God Of War Laufey takes place within a mysterious realm known as the Everywhen, which Sony describes as an afterlife for gods.

Unlike previous entries that focused primarily on a single mythology, the Everywhen allows gods, monsters and mythological beings from multiple cultures to exist together.

That means players could encounter a far wider range of enemies than ever before.

Promotional material has already hinted at Egyptian mythology through the appearance of Sekhmet, while other figures appear to draw inspiration from additional mythological traditions.

For gameplay, this could mean greater enemy variety, new powers and more diverse environments throughout the adventure.

God Of War Laufey Gameplay Combines Old And New Ideas

According to Santa Monica Studio, God Of War Laufey is designed to blend elements from both eras of the franchise.

The development team has spoken about combining the speed and aggression of the original God Of War games with the deeper storytelling and character development introduced during the Norse saga.

That balance could help the game appeal to long-time fans while still feeling fresh.

From what has been shown so far, God Of War Laufey doesn’t look like a complete reinvention. Instead, it feels like a natural evolution of the series.

What We Still Don’t Know About God Of War Laufey Gameplay

Despite the detailed reveal, there are still plenty of unanswered questions.

Sony has not revealed:

  • How large the game world will be
  • Whether there will be companion characters throughout the story
  • Additional weapons beyond the sword
  • Skill trees and progression systems
  • The full list of enemies and bosses

Most importantly, Sony has yet to confirm a God Of War Laufey release date.

With the PlayStation Store page now live, many fans expect additional gameplay information to be revealed over the coming months.

God Of War Laufey Gameplay Already Looks Promising

Although there is still a lot left to learn, the first look at God Of War Laufey gameplay has given players plenty to be excited about.

The move to a faster combat system, the introduction of the Golden Hand Of The Jötnar and the shift to Faye as the main character all suggest that Santa Monica Studio is willing to take the franchise in a bold new direction.
