Twitch has been really cracking down with DMCA copyright takedowns in recent months and now Pokimane looks to be the latest victim, although I have to say I’d be surprised if she didn’t see it coming.

Popular streamer news reporter Zach Bussey has said that people are claiming that Pokimane was watching Avatar (the anime show, not the James Cameron movie) on stream prior to being banned.

This was then confirmed by Pokimane herself who tweeted “The fire nation attacked”, referring to one of the world’s four nations in the Avatar universe.

Recently we have seen streamers start to regularly watch TV shows and movies on stream, which typically results in a DMCA takedown and a temporary ban, which does beg the question of why take the risk.

It is possible that many streamers are feeling burnt out and aren’t in the mood to be high energy and entertaining for their audience, but they need to get their streaming hours in so just watch content for easy low energy content.

But, this will likely result in the TV and movie industry taking an interest in what is taking place on Twitch, which will no doubt put pressure on the company.

Over the last year or so we have seen a crackdown on the use of unlicensed music on streams, and we could be looking at the start of the same thing happening with the movie industry.

Except for this time, we already know the outcome of it and that it could be easily avoided.

Moving back to Pokimane, the ban was likely an automatic ban resulting from a DMCA takedown and will only be a short-term ban, it will be extremely unlikely that she will see a lengthy ban or any backlash from it.

However, this could/should serve as a warning to other creators to quit while they’re ahead if they haven’t received a takedown notice if they’ve been creating similar content.
