Despite low expectations, GoldenEye 007, a first-person shooter game based on the 1995 James Bond film, turned out to be both a critical and commercial success following its initial release for the Nintendo 64 in 1997.

Recently, rumors of an upcoming remaster spread among fans.

As 2022 marks the 60th anniversary of the Bond series, fans have been told to “watch out for announcements.”

In a tweet, the official Twitter account of James Bond said:

This year we celebrate the 60th anniversary of the James Bond series. Watch out for announcements, events and new content across 2022.

Although nothing is confirmed at this time, fans think that a re-release of GoldenEye 007 could be among the surprise announcements.

Just earlier this week, the Goldeneye trademark used for “downloadable electronic game software” has been granted a second extension. This trademark renewal led fans to speculate that the remaster of the game might indeed be released soon.

While it is also true that companies regularly file for trademark renewal even without plans to release a product, fans find this intriguing, thinking that its timing may not be purely coincidental but a hint.

If the rumors are true, the announcement of such a game might be delayed due to Russia’s attacks against Ukraine. It can be recalled that GoldenEye’s story involves Soviet Russia.

GoldenEye 007 is considered an important game in the history of first-person shooters. It introduced features such as atmospheric single-player missions, stealth elements, and a console multiplayer deathmatch mode.
