It is safe to say that when Goldeneye was released on the N64 in 1997 that it changed first-person shooters and set the standard that future titles would be compared to for a number of years.

Goldeneye features a great story mode and a legendary multiplayer component, which funny enough was an afterthought that was put together very quickly.

As the years have gone on, players have been hoping to see a rerelease or a remaster of the classic N64 title released, but so far our wishes haven’t been granted, unless you want to count that rather dreadful remake on the Nintendo Wii featuring Daniel Craig instead of Pierce Brosnan.

But, after almost 25 years it looks like Goldeneye will finally be making its way to modern hardware, with at least it confirmed for Xbox as of right now.

Recently, it was spotted online that an achievement list for Goldeneye 007 has been added to True Achievements, and it even has players with some achievements unlocked.

It is very likely that the players with achievements are developers, but it does confirm that a version of the game is in development.

This wouldn’t be the first time that a modern version of Goldeneye has existed though. Back in 2007, Microsoft and Rare worked on a remaster of the original game which would have seen a release on the Xbox 360 as part of XBLA, and it was as good as completed before it was ultimately canceled.

The XBLA version of the game was leaked online early in 2021 and features the entire campaign which is playable from start to finish, but due to the current Xbox 360 emulators being very glitchy many players had issues getting it to work, but I finished the campaign and it was so much fun.

Recently, the N64 version of Goldeneye 007 saw a ratings change in Germany despite the game being unavailable for purchase in 20 years, which did spark rumors that a port of the game was in development.

One interesting thing to note is, the two players that unlocked achievements for the game did so fairly recently, with achievements being unlocked as early as October 2021 and the most recent being today. One of the accounts also made progress towards some multiplayer achievements, which confirms that it is a legitimate new version of the game, as the leaked XBLA version doesn’t have multiplayer.

With the achievements being leaked for the Xbox, this confirms that it is likely going to be released on the Xbox One, as well as being playable on the Xbox Series X.

There is currently no confirmation as to whether Goldeneye will see a release on the PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, or PC, but I think it would be strange if it didn’t.

So, I guess now we just have to sit and wait for the game to be officially announced, and when it does we hope a release date isn’t too far away.
