Removed from the Apple App store a few years ago, owners of iOS devices were left somewhat disgruntled as their favorite island was removed from play.

With very little warning and a lawsuit taking place between Epic and Apple, Fortnite was no more (for Apple users anyway). And of course, Fortnite made an in-game event from the disagreement.

But is all that about to change? Is a Fortnite iOS return about to take place? Let’s take a look below at all the details we know so far.

Beginning in August 2020, Epic removed itself from the Apple App Store, after breaking rules over payments, which then led to a lawsuit between the 2 companies over the App Stores’ payment policies.

Following the lawsuit, iOS players remained stuck in Chapter 2 Season 3 as the game was removed from the iOS store.

We all know Fortnite loves an event and this was no different with Epic beginning the #freefortnite campaign following their removal from the App Store, in which players could compete in the #freefortnite cup, with participants playing for real-life prizes including a cap in the style of the Apple logo, only instead of an apple, it was their very own llama. Players could also win a vast array of gaming hardware, including consoles. And let’s not forget the Tart Tycoon Outfit.

Epic CEO hints at the Fortnite iOS return

In December 2022, Tim Sweeney revealed in an interview that he would continue his fight against Apple and its Store fees:

“Yes, Apple built the iPhone hardware and they designed iOS, and they deserve to earn a fantastic return by selling their devices with their operating system, as did the railroads deserve to earn a fantastic return by profiting from selling railroad tickets and transportation services,”.

“But what they cannot do under the law, and under any principle of fair competition, is Apple cannot use its control over the hardware and operating system to impose trade restraints on related markets. Apple prevents other companies from establishing competing stores on iOS. That’s similar to the railroads blocking the oil refineries from shipping their products on the railroad in order to take over those related industries.”

Following the interview, Tim Sweeney then posted to Twitter on New Year’s Eve, in a post that could signal the Fortnite iOS return with the following Tweet:

The Epic Games founder and CEO gave players of Fornite and iOS users a hint that the popular game may be making its Fortnite iOS return. Featuring an image of Jellie, pointing to the sky displaying 2023 in fireworks, and a further tweet reading “Next year on iOS”, the Founder and CEO appeared to be hinting (or teasing), that the long-awaited return to iOS may finally be over.
