Dead Space remake announced at EA Play

Dead Space is a franchise that I’ve always found to be fascinating and tragic, as it hasn’t made a return in years until now, where we’re apparently getting a remake sometime. Prior to this announcement, it was assumed that Dead Space was a dead franchise, never to be brought back for a sequel or remake of any kind. The last major release was Dead Space 3 that had many mixed reviews and sold moderately well.

However, the middling sales weren’t enough for EA at the time, and as such, they shuttered the dev team Visceral Games and placed the series on indefinite ice. Fans of the franchise have clamored for some sort of sequel or remake for years and it seems that EA has seemed to finally listen to the money- I mean, the fans.

Back from the dead

In the teaser trailer we got during EA Play, a brand new and shiny kind of Dead Space is being waved in our faces. Everything you could want in a horror game is present in the trailer: moody atmosphere, spooky music, implied horrors lurking around the corner, its all wonderful. We get a shadowed look at the series’ famous Necromorphs, as one rises from a dead body in some dank hallway.

To cap off the trailer, we get an iconic shot of the series’ protagonist, Isaac Clarke, readying up in front of a bloody sign that reads, “CUT OFF THEIR LIMBS.” Every facet of this trailer has clearly been made with the hopes of stirring up the hype for horror fans and Dead Space fans alike. Even though there’s no gameplay, it’s exciting to see this setting return in such a big way.

Dead simple, its Dead Space

Without a doubt, this trailer is evoking the same kind of vibes that the Resident Evil 2 remake came out with when it was announced. It’s safe to assume that EA greenlit this project due to the success of Capcom’s own revival of its own premier survival horror series. Right off the bat, this trailer does a good job at being moody and creepy, as that was something lost by the third Dead Space game.

The final shot of the USG Ishimura floating in space gives me some serious Alien vibes and I’m all for it. If we get another successful revival of a beloved horror franchise, maybe there’s more hope for new IPs to be created. Fingers crossed that Dead Space will be the best the franchise has ever been. No release date has been announced yet, but we definitely know that Dead Space will release on the PS5, Xbox Series S|X, and PC someday.
