Is Splitgate dead now? How many players does it have?

Splitgate saw a player spike in August last year, so how has the Halo-like portaling shooter game fared since? Is Splitgate realistically a dead game now, and how many players does it have left?

Is Splitgate dead now?

So, first of all, is Splitgate dead right now? Not quite, though it has lost a lot of players compared to the 36000 spike. It averages over a thousand players at any given time, and you can find matches within a minute constantly on PC in every playlist in my experience. I’ve personally had no issues getting games constantly and haven’t once had a playlist fail to find a match.

I do use crossplay though, so it’s possible that the match time is being boosted by players on the other available platforms such as PS5, PS4 and Xbox series X. You might get a very different experience and reach a different answer to our question of is Splitgate dead without the support from Crossplay.

Around a thousand players are much lower than the heights Splitgate has achieved, so it could certainly be argued that the game is slowly dying as well. Let’s take a look into the stats to get a bit more specific with that though because the game is by no means dead yet.

The Splitgate playerbase today and how many players it has

Splitgate is a much quieter game community than it was back in August last year when the playerbase shot up from almost four thousand total players to just over thirty-six thousand, an over nine-fold increase in the space of a month.

Unfortunately for Splitgate, that attention only lasted a month or two, with the playerbase dropping off back down to about around three thousand within two months, and since then trailing down a few hundred players per month on average.

Still, the playerbase the game has right now is quite healthy, all playlists are available and unless occasionally seeing the same name bothers you in multi-hour gaming sessions, you probably won’t notice any effects from the current playerbase size.

It’s also definitely worth mentioning that these stats are from Steam, but Splitgate does have complete crossplay support – so you can be matched with players running the game on console, and their player bases are not reflected in the numbers above.

Will Splitgate recover and grow again?

It’d be a surprise to see Splitgate reach those 36000 player number heights again, to be sure. But the game isn’t trapped in a death spiral or anything, it’s currently quite healthy, if small. So is Splitgate dead? No. Is it dying? Maybe.

There’s even a major update coming within the next month when this season ends. Complete with a road map no less, which you can see below.

While the roadmap is mostly community-focused, some gameplay features can be seen here already. Community maps in playlists would mean more map variety, which is one of the issues that you notice quite quickly in Splitgate – so tackling it could go a long way alone. And that’s on top of any changes the devs have included in Splitgate beta Season 2 that we don’t yet know about.

It seems pretty unlikely to me that we’ve seen the last of this FPS, and while it’s not quite the long-term success story like Fortnite from Epic Games yet, it definitely has a good number of fans, while the early access open beta style version of Splitgate we have right now is far from being a bunch of servers with nobody left on.

Still, it’d be nice if the new Splitgate Season launch could boost the player base on Steam a bit, I could use some new names to kill through portal walls. The extra feedback to devs would be nice too, I suppose.

Hopefully, that’s helped quell any wondering regarding the fate of the game and answered is Splitgate dead for you, with that out of the way you can always keep an eye on the official Splitgate Twitter for further news, as well as our Splitgate section here on The Click.
