I won’t lie and say I’m an aficionado of Battle Royale games, really only having played a few months of Fortnite a few years back and the tiniest dabble into other games. Even so, the uniqueness of this upcoming title has me and others enthralled. The new Scavengers Early Access title on Steam just dropped and looks to be a possibly genre redefining game if it continues to get dev support and a large enough playerbase.

What is it?

Scavengers is a odd hybrid game which mixes squad based Battle Royale gameplay with a procedurally generated open world map that focuses on survival and data extraction.

The idea seems to be to survive in the cold wilds and scavenge as much data as possible before heading to an evac point. The challenge comes in the competing teams doing the same, all the while having to face off against these other squads and AI controlled opponents. This isn’t even to mention the crafting system which can allow you and your teammates to get the upper edge through more powerful weapons and other items.

Similarly to games like Apex Legends, each member of the squad has different abilities and basic loadouts, allowing players to spec into certain roles within the team. A nice change is that upon dying, a player can respawn but loses all items and data. This means even if a team is behind, they can still try to hustle and get some rewards at the end of the match.

The new Big Thing?

Well, its hard to say for sure but I do think there are some big points in the Scavengers Early Access game’s favor. For one, being able to respawn and make it to the end of a match makes it much more beginner friendly. In other Battle Royales, its sort of a trial by fire as you’re kicked the moment your team is out. Allowing for beginners to rough it out and learn at their own pace is surely going to be helpful for the game.

Additionally, it looks like support should continue. For an early access title, the game looks astonishingly polished and fluid. With a long enough dev cycle that adds content through relatively consistent updates, I could see a game that stands the test of time in a year of many fad games which have since fallen to memes or obscurity.

Myself? Well, I’m actually gonna give the game a shot with a few of the pals over the weekend. Scavengers looks like it has a good amount of things which appeal to me within the genre, and with an admission fee of, well, nothing, I can’t complain much. Let’s hope this takes off and gives fans of the genre another good option!
