As with most Souls-like games, you’re not expected to defeat the first tutorial boss, and the situation isn’t different with Elden Ring. Right at the start of the game, after completing your customization, you’ll find the Grafted Scion, a spider-like monster that’s ready to grant you the sweet taste of death.

But you can turn the tides of the battle if you’re determined enough to defeat a super-strong boss that can obliterate you in two hits. Also, you don’t have any way of healing yourself, making the deed a little bit harder.

But it’s feasible, and the game will reward you if you accomplish it. Here’s what happens if you defeat the tutorial boss in Elden Ring.

Defeating the Grafted Scion, the tutorial boss in Elden Ring

When you first step in the Chapel of Anticipation, the tutorial boss will mercilessly try to slaughter you, but with some patience, it’s actually possible to defeat it here, in the early game. Notice that since you’re expected to lose, you must play a perfect battle without getting hit.

If you manage to best the creature in combat, you’ll receive its weapons as a special reward. He drops the Ornamental Straight Sword, which has the Golden Tempering skill, allowing you to use dual-wielding attacks, and the Golden Beast Crest Shield, one of the strongest greatshields in the whole game. He also gives you 3200 runes.

But still, death is unavoidable. After defeating the Scion, you can explore the bridge ahead of you, but there’s nothing to see except for a cliff. When you take a step on it, it will fall off, killing you instantly.

From here on, the game will continue as normal with the tutorial section on the Fringefolk Hero’s Grave, but you’ll have some nice weapons to start your journey. Outside of the personal realization, there’s nothing else to gain from defeating it early.

And I say early because you can actually have a rematch with the boss by reaching a portal in The Four Belfries. From there, you can return to the Chapel of Anticipation and defeat the Grafted Scion, this time in a fair fight as you’re properly geared. It will still drop the items, so don’t worry if you couldn’t get them at the start.
