The long-awaited fighting game Riot Games promised us back in their 10-Year Anniversary Celebration, known only as Project L, finally had some gameplay footage revealed. The game is still in its early stages of development.

Project L was announced back in 2019, along with Project A (which is now released as Valorant), Riot Forge, the Arcane Netflix series, and the mobile version of Riot’s games, such as Wild Rift, Legends of Runeterra, and Teamfight Tactics.

The video above was revealed at the Undercity Nights event which is currently happening in Los Angeles. Invited players, streamers, and personalities were invited to the event celebrating the release of Arcane.

Project L was revealed to be a tag-team fighting game, limited to two characters for each player to control.

And of course, those characters come right from Riot’s main game, League of Legends. In the gameplay for Project L we can see Ekko, Jinx, Darius, Ahri, and Katarina. Ekko and Jinx are the main focus, recreating a scene from the final episodes of Arcane which aired today on Netflix.

The dev talk focuses on explaining Riot’s road to creating their own fighting game, as it would not be an easy task coming from such different genres (MOBA, Autobattler, or shooter).

Their approach to the gameplay is that of an “easy to learn, hard to master” style, which they believe is the most appropriate for players to pick up the game, in particular those who are not used to fighters.

In other words, they’re going for a noob-friendly game, while still being complex and interesting for tryhards. Be ready to spend some good hours in the training modes if you want to truly master the game.

As stated by the devs themselves, the game is currently in “R&D: the phase of game development where we’re exploring options and finding the fun”. So all of the footage is still a glimpse of what will, someday, be the real game.

And this day may take a while. Project L (which is obviously a temporary name) is not getting released before the next two years. The game still has a long way to go, but Riot promises to keep us informed. The next announcement should be happening early in the second half of 2022.
