Final Fantasy XIV recently broke its own concurrent players record on Steam. The reason for such a rise in popularity lies in the coming of a famous World of Warcraft streamer, Asmongold, to Final Fantasy XIV. Those games are usually seen as “rivals” for the throne of the best MMO, since they have similar gameplay aspects and are both very popular in the MMO scene.

Having reached its previous record in 2019, SteamCharts shows us that a new record was reached during this weekend, now on the mark of 47.538 players.

In fact, FFXIV numbers on Twitch have also reached a new peak, with 221.337 viewers during Asmongold stream. His stream alone had a 212k viewers peak on June 3, the day he started his FFXIV playthrough.

The total number of concurrent players is also even higher. Considering that console players and Square Enix account players weren’t counted, we may have seen one of the biggest popularity bumps in Final Fantasy XIV history.

Recently, many WoW players have been unsatisfied with some of the changes its latest expansion, Shadowlands, has brought to the game. Final Fantasy XIV has been a “refugee center” for those players.

Sadly, Asmongold’s visit was far from perfect. Many people started to harass the streamer, following him around, making false reports against him and trying to ruin his experience in the game. This attitude is not only against the game’s ToS, but also shames the image of the community, known for being well-receptive and usually better than other games.

But happily, Square Enix seems to be taking measures against the harassers. A thread on Reddit states that one of the biggest offenders, who followed Asmongold around in his Whale mount, has been banned, and we hope that other people that actively tried to make the guy’s day worse also receive the deserved punishment.
