Albion Online Ancient Lands portals appear in the open world and lead into Dragonfire’s floating-island realm. Yellow Zone entrances take you to a non-lethal Orange Zone version, while Red Zone and Outlands entrances lead to lethal PvP. Pick the entrance based on how much risk you’re prepared to take.

Small portals are for solo players and smaller groups. Large portals accommodate organised parties of up to 20, with similarly sized groups matched together. Inside, you’ll defeat Keepers, open routes between islands, fight Drakes and decide whether the central Fire Drake is worth staying for.

Albion Online Ancient Lands portals: Yellow Zone vs lethal entrances

The risk depends on your entrance. In the Orange Zone reached from Yellow Zones, equipped gear and items you carried into the Ancient Lands are protected. Item Freeze protects those original inventory items, but loot collected inside can drop on defeat. Portals in Red Zones and the Outlands lead to full-loot PvP, where equipment is at risk too.

Patch 3 made Small Yellow Zone portals more common but reduced both their Fame and loot. The reduction did not apply to Small portals in Red or Black Zones. Large portals became more common during prime-time hours too.

How to find Albion Online Ancient Lands portals

Look for entrances marked on the World Map. Small portals can appear with very little warning. Large portals are announced ahead of time, giving organised groups a chance to assemble. A portal’s size matters because parties of similar size are matched together, so a solo player isn’t dropped straight against a complete five-person group.

For Small Yellow Zone portals only, the lock time is now five minutes and the time allowed to enter is ten minutes. Don’t assume those limits apply to all portal sizes and locations. Check the entrance you’re using before arranging your party’s arrival.

Albion Online Ancient Lands portals: Keystones and Leygates

Your party starts on its own outer island. Since Patch 1, the quest requires defeating 50% of the island’s mobs, not earning a fixed amount of Fame. Marmots do not count. Complete the quest to reveal a Keystone, then use it to activate a Leygate to a neighbouring island.

A Leygate you’ve opened is not yours alone. Other groups can use that connection, and a Keystone can be moved to activate another route. Check the minimap before crossing, particularly when rivals might be approaching the same Drake.

Albion Online Ancient Lands portals: Drakes and rewards

There are four Drake islands marked on the minimap. They offer treasure chests, Dragon Blood and Spirit Waystone Fragments, among other rewards. Defeat all four Drakes and the Fire Drake appears at the centre, guarding the biggest reward of the run.

Beating the Fire Drake can provide a complete Spirit Waystone. That item opens the separate Dragon Sanctuary raid, so it isn’t the same thing as a portal you use to enter the Ancient Lands. The October balance update also concentrated more valuable loot in the Fire Drake chest and raised the chance of Fire Dragon armour artifacts there.

The central chest is valuable if you need armour artifacts or a Spirit Waystone, but every party has the same incentive to reach it. In lethal instances, weigh the potential reward against losing the loot and equipment you’re carrying.

Albion Online Ancient Lands portals: what happens when you’re knocked down?

The Ancient Lands use a Bleedout state after PvP knockdowns in both Orange and lethal regions. You grow weaker over time, but can hold out longer if your party stays nearby. An ally can revive you, although you’ll carry a debuff for the rest of your expedition. A revival lets the group recover from a bad fight, but it isn’t unlimited protection.

Remember the loot difference before pushing on. In Orange, Item Freeze protects what you brought into the instance, while new loot is vulnerable. In lethal Ancient Lands, your equipment is at risk too. If several teammates are down, extracting what you’ve earned can be the better choice.

How to exit Albion Online Ancient Lands portals

You don’t have to kill the central boss to leave. Find any entrance portal within the Ancient Lands and use it to extract. Your group returns to the original open-world entry point and receives temporary invisibility and protection.

Leaving early is a sensible option if you’ve already collected valuable loot. Follow the active Leygates to an entrance portal and extract; temporary protection on arrival gives you a chance to move away from the exit.

Albion Online Ancient Lands portals: November balance changes

Dragonfire Patch 4 on 2 November 2026 gave mobs in instances for two or three players 10% more Health and reduced their chest loot by around 10%. All bosses in Large Ancient Lands had their Health reduced by 40%. This is the current balance, not the expired 15% Fame and loot event that ended in October.

The practical choice is between accessible Small Yellow portals with reduced rewards, tougher duo and trio mobs with slightly less chest loot, and faster Large boss fights. Select a portal your party can handle rather than assuming the same route suits everyone.
