Guild Wars 2 Living World Season 2 Free: How to Unlock and Play It

Guild Wars 2 Living World Season 2 free access is now a permanent part of the base game. ArenaNet removed the separate purchase requirement on 13 October 2026, so anyone with a level 80 character can play the whole season without buying an expansion.

Free-to-play accounts are included, and there’s no limited-time claim window. Season 2 fills the gap between the original game’s story, Living World Season 1 and the first expansion, Heart of Thorns. You can follow the entire chapter before deciding whether to buy more content.

Guild Wars 2 Living World Season 2 free: Who can play without buying an expansion?

Everyone with a level 80 character can play. This includes returning players, new accounts and people who haven’t spent anything on Guild Wars 2. Season 1 was already free, and ArenaNet has now put Season 2 alongside it.

You don’t have to log in on a special day to claim an episode, and previously missed chapters no longer need to be purchased with gems. This isn’t a weekend giveaway. Once you’ve reached level 80, the story is waiting for you.

How to start Guild Wars 2 Living World Season 2 free episodes

Open your character’s Hero panel and choose Story Journal. The journal contains your unlocked story chapters and lets you choose an active story. You don’t need a separate download or a Season 2 purchase from the Gem Store.

1. Log in to Guild Wars 2 on a character that has reached level 80.
2. Open the Hero panel and go to Story Journal.
3. Scroll to Living World Season 2, which comes after Season 1.
4. Select the first episode, Gates of Maguuma, then choose the option to make that story active.
5. Follow the green story objective and the instructions shown in the journal to begin playing.

Once Gates of Maguuma is active, follow the green story objective. If you’re in the middle of another chapter, you can finish that step before switching to Season 2. The journal also lets you return to earlier completed episodes.

Guild Wars 2 Living World Season 2 free: Where it fits in the story

Play Season 2 after Season 1, before starting Heart of Thorns. It introduces the growing threat of Mordremoth and characters who become important in the expansion. That context makes the opening of Heart of Thorns easier to follow.

Heart of Thorns is still a separate expansion purchase, as are the later expansions. Being able to play Season 2 is a way to carry on with the story for free, not access to all the adventures that follow.

Guild Wars 2 Living World Season 2 free: All eight episodes included

All eight episodes are included, starting with Gates of Maguuma and ending with Point of No Return. Between them are Entanglement; The Dragon’s Reach, Parts 1 and 2; Echoes of the Past; Tangled Paths; and Seeds of Truth.

You get the entire Season 2 storyline, not a trial or just the first episode. It was originally released in chapters, with separate unlocks for players who missed an episode’s release window. That old purchase system no longer applies.

Guild Wars 2 Living World Season 2 free: What to check if the story is locked

If the story isn’t available, check your character’s level first. You must be level 80 to start Living World Seasons 1 and 2. Then open the Hero panel’s Story Journal and find Season 2, rather than searching for an old pack in the store.

Already level 80? Make sure the game is updated and that you’re looking at the right part of the journal. If a chapter still appears locked on an eligible account, contact ArenaNet Support. You shouldn’t need to pay gems to fix an entitlement included in the base game.

Guild Wars 2 Living World Season 2 free: What you do and don’t unlock

Not to everyone. ArenaNet now includes Seasons 3 and 4 with the Heart of Thorns and Path of Fire expansion bundle. Season 5, also called The Icebrood Saga, comes with End of Dragons. Players who already own the qualifying expansions get missing episodes unlocked automatically.

Does Guild Wars 2 Living World Season 2 free access have a deadline?

No. ArenaNet’s 13 October announcement makes Season 2 part of the permanent base-game offering. The 15 October deadline mentioned in the same announcement is a support follow-up date for refunds and Starter Pack items, not an expiry date for the free story.
