Fortnite Simple Build: How to Enable It and Use Walls and Stairs

Fortnite Simple Build gives players a faster way to place basic structures without cycling through every individual building piece. Epic’s 2026 PC settings guide describes looking up or down for stairs with the primary input, and looking forward for walls with the secondary input. You enable it through Game > Building.

It’s aimed at making the first steps of building easier, particularly for players who already know how to shoot but freeze when somebody starts placing walls. Simple Build isn’t the same as Simple Edit: one helps you place structures, the other helps you change structures you’ve already placed.

How to enable Fortnite Simple Build

Launch Fortnite and open Settings from your profile menu. Select the Game tab, scroll to Building and turn on Simple Build if your current mode and platform offer it. Apply the option, then enter a noncompetitive, build-enabled place where you can practice. Don’t look for it under Video or Audio. On consoles, the displayed controller bindings may differ from the keyboard examples in Epic’s PC guide.

Placing walls with the simplified control

Epic says that looking forward while using the secondary input places walls with Fortnite Simple Build. Stand on relatively flat ground, point ahead and try the control while you have enough building materials. Move to the side and repeat, seeing how placement follows your direction. Build pieces still need valid space, materials and a mode that permits player construction.

Fortnite Simple Build: how stairs work when you look up or down

Use the primary input while looking up or down to work with stairs, according to Epic’s description. The direction of your view helps determine the structure the simplified system selects, so aim deliberately before pressing. If you get a different piece than expected, repeat the action slowly in a quiet practice area rather than assuming your controller is defective.

Simple Build versus Simple Edit

Fortnite Simple Build changes how you select and place buildings. Simple Edit changes how you make openings or edits in a placed piece, using where you’re aiming instead of manual tile selection. You can learn one at a time. Turning on Simple Edit won’t automatically teach the wall and stair commands, and turning on Simple Build doesn’t mean you must stop practising traditional edits.

Fortnite Simple Build: why a building command sometimes fails

Check that the playlist permits building: Zero Build doesn’t offer normal player-built walls. Also confirm your materials and that there’s space for a structure. If switching into build mode fails entirely on keyboard, Epic has acknowledged conflicts when the build-mode key shares a binding with an individual building piece; reset or separate overlapping keybinds before reinstalling Fortnite.

Can you use it in Ranked or competitive modes?

Fortnite building rules vary by playlist, and Epic explicitly excludes Simple Edit from competitive modes. Don’t infer from that statement that every Simple Build availability rule is identical; check what the live game allows in the playlist you’re playing. If your simplified controls don’t appear, try a regular building mode first. Use traditional build controls wherever the feature is unavailable.

Practice without throwing away your usual binds

Start with a defensive wall, then a staircase, then alternate between them while keeping your crosshair direction intentional. Try moving between positions before adding editing. Fortnite Simple Build is meant to reduce the number of actions required, not substitute for knowing where cover should go. Keep a backup of your old keybinds so you can return to them if the simpler layout doesn’t suit you.
