A Pokémon GO Research Breakthrough is earned after collecting seven Field Research stamps. You can earn a maximum of one stamp per day by completing and claiming an eligible Field Research task, but the seven stamps do not need to be earned on consecutive days. Once the row is full, you can claim the Breakthrough reward and begin a new cycle.

How to get a Pokémon GO Research Breakthrough
To work toward a Pokémon GO Research Breakthrough, open the Research screen and complete a Field Research task. The first eligible task you claim that day awards a stamp. Completing ten more tasks on the same day can still give their normal rewards, but it will not add a second stamp.
After seven stamps, the Pokémon GO Research Breakthrough becomes available to claim. The stamps are about days on which you claim qualifying Field Research, not a seven-day streak. If you take Tuesday off, your existing stamps remain there and you can continue on Wednesday.
Do the seven stamps have to be consecutive?
No. A Pokémon GO Research Breakthrough does not reset because you miss a day. This is one of the biggest differences between Research stamps and the separate seven-day catch and PokéStop streaks. You could earn four stamps this week and the final three next week if that suits your play schedule.
| Action | Research result |
|---|---|
| Complete and claim first eligible Field Research of the day | Earn 1 stamp |
| Complete more Field Research that day | Rewards, but no extra stamp |
| Reach 7 total stamps | Unlock Research Breakthrough |
| Miss a day | Keep existing stamps |
What rewards come from a Pokémon GO Research Breakthrough?
The exact encounter pool and bonus items from a Pokémon GO Research Breakthrough can change with the current Season. Pokémon GO often publishes the active Research Breakthrough encounter pool on its seasonal page, so an old guide that lists one permanent reward Pokémon should not be treated as current forever.
When you claim a Pokémon GO Research Breakthrough, you receive the current reward package and, when included for that Season, a Pokémon encounter. The encounter is separate from the daily stamp itself. You do not need to claim the reward the exact moment the seventh stamp appears, although waiting can affect which seasonal pool is active when you finally claim it.
Can you earn a stamp from the daily bonus task?
Bonus Field Research can count toward a Pokémon GO Research Breakthrough when it behaves as normal Field Research and is eligible to award a stamp. The key point is that you only receive one stamp per day. If you already earned today’s stamp from another task, claiming a bonus task will not create another one.
Special Research and Timed Research are different systems. Completing their tasks does not normally add Field Research stamps. The stamp row belongs to Field Research, including eligible sponsored or bonus Field Research when the game treats them as such.
Why your Pokémon GO Research Breakthrough did not advance
If your Pokémon GO Research Breakthrough stamp count did not move, first check whether you already collected a stamp earlier that same local day. The day runs from midnight to midnight in your local time. Also make sure you actually claimed the completed Field Research reward rather than only finishing its objective.
The Pokémon GO Research Breakthrough is deliberately slow and forgiving: one stamp a day, seven stamps total, no requirement for consecutive play. That makes it worth keeping at least one easy Field Research task available for days when you only have a minute to open the game.
There is also no advantage to hoarding easy completed Field Research for several days in the hope of collecting several stamps at once. The stamp is awarded according to the day you claim an eligible task, and the daily cap still applies. If you know you will only have a minute to play tomorrow, keeping one simple task nearly finished can be useful, but you still need to claim it on that day. Players who regularly forget can make the Research screen part of their first login routine, alongside the daily catch and any free or event-specific items they want to collect.
