Sims 4 won’t launch when you click Play in the EA app? Move your Mods folder outside the active Sims 4 user directory, remove localthumbcache.package and try again. If the game still doesn’t start, rename the Sims 4 folder under Documents to let the game generate fresh settings. These tests help distinguish outdated mods and damaged user files from installation or launcher problems.
Before troubleshooting, back up Saves, Tray and Mods from Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4. This guide covers startup crashes, the Play button returning immediately to the launcher and games failing before the main menu. Keep your original user folder untouched until you know which step restores the game.
Sims 4 won’t launch: quick symptom check

| Symptom | First check |
|---|---|
| Broken startup after a patch | Remove Mods and local cache |
| Game fails without mods | Generate a new user folder |
| EA app returns to Play | Close stuck process, check launcher cache and repair |
| Only one household hangs | Test or recover that save, not the whole installation |
The same symptom can have different causes, so test one change at a time. If you can start the game but it freezes when opening a household, skip to the save-specific section below.
Sims 4 won’t launch: remove mods and clear cache
When Sims 4 won’t launch with custom content installed, close the game and EA app. Move Mods to a temporary folder outside the game directory and delete localthumbcache.package inside the Sims 4 user folder. Relaunch. If the main menu works, start a new throwaway save for testing rather than overwriting a household that uses missing content.
Restore only creator-verified compatible mods in small groups. If the issue returns, divide the most recently restored group in half, then repeat until you’ve identified the file. Look for duplicate versions of script mods after manual updates. Our broken CC guide covers this method. EA warns that saving with missing mods and CC can remove custom content from a saved household, so exit without saving when inspecting an existing one.
Sims 4 won’t launch: reset the user folder safely
If the game fails without mods, close everything and rename Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4 to The Sims 4 Backup. Launch again. The game should create a fresh user folder containing default settings. Your installed base game and expansion packs are stored elsewhere, so renaming the personal user folder does not uninstall those purchases.
If a clean folder loads, something in the original user data needs investigation. Copy saves and other files from your backup back gradually, checking the game after each step. Keep the original backed up; don’t copy all the old Mods back at once. If the clean folder also fails, use the launcher troubleshooting below.
Clear EA app cache when Sims 4 won’t launch

Open the EA app menu, go to Help > App Recovery > Clear Cache, then restart the app and sign in again. EA recommends this for downloads, stuck updates and app problems. On a Mac, the App Recovery option appears under the Help menu at the top of the screen.
This clears the launcher cache, not localthumbcache.package inside the Sims 4 user folder. If an update hasn’t finished downloading or installing, complete that update before another test. A stalled EA app may need a restart rather than a reinstall of the entire game.
Sims 4 won’t launch: repair installed game files
In the EA app Library, find The Sims 4, open the three-dot menu on its game tile and choose Repair. Wait for the process to finish and retry the launch. Steam players can use Steam’s installed-file verification tool. Repair checks the game installation; it cannot update third-party mods or guarantee a broken save will work.
If repairing restores startup, test with a fresh save before returning your backed-up personal files. If the problem returns only after you restore old mods or settings, focus your investigation there.
Sims 4 won’t launch: when Play returns immediately
If Sims 4 won’t launch and the EA app immediately offers Play again, check for a stuck Sims 4 or EA process, close it and restart the computer. Try EA app cache recovery and the clean-folder test. EA also suggests temporarily disabling the in-game overlay under Settings > Application > In-game overlay to test whether that setting is interfering. Restore it afterwards if unrelated.
Look at any Windows Security or antivirus quarantine notice, but don’t switch off protection as a generic fix. Verify a blocked executable’s actual path and source first. Check official operating system and graphics-driver updates if needed. Record any error code, particularly if other games installed through the EA app fail as well.
What if only one save gets stuck loading?
When the main menu opens normally but loading one particular household hangs, that isn’t the same as Sims 4 won’t launch. Compare a new save with the affected one, and check Load Game > Recover Save for an earlier recovery point. Make a separate backup before recovering. Our infinite loading screens guide explains save-specific checks.
