The Fortnite Sprite Locator Buff has greatly improved the new Gizmo, giving players a much better chance of finding rare Sprite variants instead of ordinary base versions.
Epic Games deployed the change through a hotfix on July 21, 2026, following complaints that Sprite Locators were regularly producing common Sprites. This made the consumable Gizmo feel wasteful, especially for players who had already extracted most of the standard versions.
The updated Locator now has a higher chance of producing a Sprite variant and only a very low chance of producing a base Sprite. Epic is also granting three free Sprite Locators to eligible players as compensation for the Gizmos they used before the improvement was introduced.
What Changed With the Fortnite Sprite Locator Buff?
The Fortnite Sprite Locator Buff changes the type of Sprite players are likely to discover after activating the Gizmo.
Before the hotfix, a Sprite Locator could lead to a regular base Sprite that the player had already found and extracted. Although the Locator technically worked, the reward was often of little use to anyone trying to complete the rarer sections of the Sprite collection.
Following the hotfix, special variants are considerably more likely to appear.
These can include Sprite types such as:
- Galaxy Sprites
- Gummy Sprites
- Gold Sprites
- Gem Sprites
- Holofoil Sprites
- Other collectable variants
A normal Sprite can still appear, but Epic says the chance is now very low. The Fortnite Sprite Locator Buff does not guarantee a specific rare version, and players may still uncover a variant they already own.
Nevertheless, each Locator should now provide a much better opportunity to make progress towards completing the collection.
Why Was the Sprite Locator Changed?
The Sprite Locator was added with the Fortnite v41.20 update as part of the expanded Gizmo system.
Its purpose is to locate a nearby Sprite Chest, allowing players to search for Sprites without relying entirely on random exploration. However, the original version did not sufficiently favour special variants.
Players could spend a limited Sprite Locator, follow its directions and open the marked chest, only to find a base Sprite already recorded in their collection.
The Fortnite Sprite Locator Buff addresses that problem by changing the odds behind the result. Rather than functioning as a general Sprite finder, the Locator is now far more useful as a rare-variant hunting tool.
That makes it particularly valuable for players who have finished the easier parts of their Sprite tracker but are still missing Galaxy, Gummy, Gold or other uncommon forms.
How to Use a Sprite Locator in Fortnite
To benefit from the Fortnite Sprite Locator Buff, players must obtain and activate a Sprite Locator during a match.
Follow these steps:
- Enter a supported Fortnite Battle Royale match.
- Obtain a Sprite Locator Gizmo.
- Switch to your Pickaxe.
- Open the Gizmo selection wheel.
- Select the Sprite Locator.
- Activate it to locate a nearby Sprite Chest.
- Follow the marker to the identified location.
- Open the Sprite Chest and collect the Sprite.
- Carry the Sprite to an Extraction Site or use a Portable Extractor.
- Complete the extraction to save the Sprite to your collection.
Simply finding or carrying the Sprite is not enough. It must be successfully extracted before it becomes a permanent collection entry.
If another player eliminates you before the extraction is complete, you may lose the Sprite and have to find that variant again in another match.

Does the Fortnite Sprite Locator Buff Guarantee a Rare Sprite?
The Fortnite Sprite Locator Buff does not guarantee that every Locator will produce a rare Sprite.
Epic has increased the likelihood of variants while reducing the likelihood of base Sprites. This means the odds are now heavily weighted towards special versions, but randomness remains part of the system.
Players could still receive:
- A base Sprite
- A variant they already own
- A variant they are not currently targeting
- A new rare Sprite needed for their collection
The Locator also does not appear to examine your personal collection before selecting a result. It improves variant odds generally rather than specifically identifying a Sprite you are missing.
As a result, players with nearly complete collections may still encounter duplicates.
How to Get Three Free Sprite Locators
Alongside the Fortnite Sprite Locator Buff, Epic is compensating players who previously used an Extraction Gizmo during a match.
Eligible players will receive three Sprite Locators in their loadout. The grant is intended to replace some of the value lost when Gizmos were used under the original, less effective odds.
Players should not need to purchase the Locators or complete an additional quest.
To check for the grant:
- Close and restart Fortnite.
- Log back into your Epic Games account.
- Open the relevant Sprite or Gizmo loadout menu.
- Check whether three Sprite Locators have been added.
The grant may not reach every eligible account simultaneously. If the Locators do not immediately appear, restart the game before assuming the account has been missed.
Epic specifically referred to players who had used an Extraction Gizmo, rather than only those who had activated a Sprite Locator. This suggests that using another qualifying Gizmo may also make an account eligible.
Sprite Locator vs Portable Extractor
The Fortnite Sprite Locator Buff improves how players find rare Sprites, but the Locator does not complete the extraction itself.
The Sprite Locator and Portable Extractor have separate purposes:
| Gizmo | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Sprite Locator | Finds a Sprite Chest and now heavily favours variant Sprites |
| Portable Extractor | Extracts a carried Sprite from almost anywhere on the island |
| Extraction Site Booster | Speeds up or improves the extraction process at an Extraction Site |
Using a Sprite Locator and Portable Extractor together can create an efficient collection run.
The Locator helps uncover a rare variant, while the Portable Extractor allows the player to secure it without travelling across the island to a fixed Extraction Site.
This is particularly useful when the Storm is closing, an Extraction Site is contested or the player has found an especially rare Sprite they do not want to risk losing.
Best Way to Use the Fortnite Sprite Locator Buff
The best way to take advantage of the Fortnite Sprite Locator Buff is to prepare for extraction before activating the Gizmo.
Check the nearby Extraction Sites and keep a Portable Extractor when possible. Once the Locator reveals a chest, travel directly to it and avoid unnecessary fights while carrying the Sprite.
Players should also consider activating Locators earlier in the match. This provides more time to reach the marked chest, collect the Sprite and complete the extraction before the Storm restricts movement.
A sensible strategy is:
- Obtain a Portable Extractor first when possible
- Activate the Sprite Locator in a safe area
- Travel directly to the marked chest
- Confirm whether the Sprite is needed
- Extract it immediately if it is rare
- Avoid carrying an important Sprite for longer than necessary
The improved odds make the Sprite Locator more rewarding, but successful collection progress still depends on safely extracting the result.
Is the Sprite Locator Worth Using Now?
The Fortnite Sprite Locator Buff has transformed the Locator into one of the most useful Gizmos for Sprite collectors.
It was difficult to justify consuming the item when it frequently produced a common Sprite. With variants now heavily favoured, every Locator offers a stronger chance of uncovering something useful.
The Gizmo remains partly dependent on luck, and it cannot guarantee a missing collection entry. However, players searching for rare Galaxy, Gold, Gummy, Gem or Holofoil Sprites should now find it considerably more valuable.
The three free Locators also provide eligible players with an immediate opportunity to test the improved odds without having to obtain additional Gizmos first.
For anyone attempting to complete the Fortnite Sprite collection, the Fortnite Sprite Locator Buff is a significant improvement and should make the rarest gaps noticeably easier to fill.
