The publisher’s 8 October announcement lists Steam, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch and Switch 2 for 3 December. That is a confirmed multiplatform date, not just a PC launch with console versions to follow at some unspecified time.

Earlier announcements promised console releases during 2026, but the publisher has now named each platform and confirmed the same December date for all five versions.

An exact unlock hour and UK price have not been included in the announcement. Check the store for your chosen platform nearer launch for its buying details.

What is the story of The Road of Dust and Sorrow?

Katherine and Ava are searching for somewhere safe after a biological disaster. A genetically engineered crop meant to end famine has helped destroy civilisation. Strange vegetation spreads over derelict streets, buildings are abandoned and the surviving population faces dangers at every turn.

Katherine and Ava also attract the attention of the Preacher and his mysterious cult, who have disturbing plans for the people still alive. Protecting Ava is at the centre of Katherine’s story.

The developers call it cozy horror, pairing detailed pixel art and quieter moments between Katherine and Ava with a bleak setting and survival-horror tension.

Exploration, combat and puzzles

You’ll search deserted rooms for supplies, solve environmental puzzles and look for ways through dangerous areas. When enemies appear, you can fight, run or find another route. It’s a story-driven single-player game.

In its 26 October update, Painted Black Games said it was still balancing combat and resource scarcity. That could affect the feel of encounters between the current demo and the final game.

The Dusters are unlike standard flesh-eating zombies. Their behaviour comes from a genetically engineered crop and a substance called fairy dust. Our Dusters explanation covers the lore behind these enemies.

Can you play a demo before The Road of Dust and Sorrow release date?

Yes. The extended Steam demo launched on 16 October and covers the whole of Act 1. Painted Black Games says it’s twice as long as the earlier version, with more story and changes to the controls, combat and interface.

Our Act 1 demo guide explains how to download the expanded build, what has changed and whether save transfer has been confirmed.

Controller support and Steam Deck

Steam lists single-player, achievements and full Xbox and PlayStation controller support. The developer recommends a controller. Steam Deck compatibility, however, is marked Unknown, not Verified.

The announcement covers the digital launch. Any physical edition would need a separate confirmation.
