UNDERDEEP Beginner Guide: Jobs, Dungeon Mapping, Idle Combat and Karma

UNDERDEEP beginner guide starts with jobs, dungeon mapping, equipment and automatic exploration. UNDERDEEP lets your character adventure while you are away, but you still decide how it develops and what it does.

You begin by creating a character and entering a fantasy dungeon. As you explore, the map records where you have been, your job develops and you collect new gear. Once you know which decisions are yours and which the game handles automatically, everything becomes much easier to follow.

Every character begins as a Newbie. The developer says that experience allows you to develop towards Warrior, Rogue, Ruler and Crafter job types. Those are future directions for your character, not four different starting classes you must choose before entering the dungeon.

Start by learning how the Newbie job feels and which skills you can use. As you gain experience, you can start thinking about your preferred path.

How dungeon maps and markers work

Your dungeon map is recorded automatically as you explore. You can also place custom markers to keep track of locations that matter to you. There is no need to draw every corridor by hand, but you are still responsible for deciding which discoveries are worth noting.

Mark anywhere you want to return to, whether it’s an unfinished route or an area worth exploring with better equipment. That makes it easier to find your way back later.

Manual play versus idle exploration

The game supports hands-on control and automated exploration. You can set your strategy beforehand and allow your character to keep exploring while you are not actively playing. Automation is therefore part of your overall approach, not a replacement for every decision.

Spend a little time exploring manually so you know how your character handles the dungeon. Then try automated actions with a strategy that fits your skills and equipment. As your build changes, check whether that strategy still suits you.

UNDERDEEP beginner guide: items and skills

UNDERDEEP lists more than 500 unique items, including weapons, armour and accessories. The developer also highlights skill combinations that can strengthen each other, allowing different approaches to character development.

Compare new items with the skills your character already uses. A weapon or accessory that works well with your build can be more useful than something that simply looks impressive.

What does karma change?

Your choices and behaviour inside the dungeon affect karma. That is an officially described mechanic, but the Steam listing does not specify numerical thresholds, exact point rewards or a complete chart of outcomes.

Keep an eye on the decisions you make. Karma responds to your behaviour, although the developer hasn’t detailed every point value or reward. It’s something to watch as you explore, not a number to optimise immediately.

Are there multiplayer encounters?

Yes, but they are asynchronous. You can encounter characters created by other players and configure your own character’s dialogue and behaviour for such meetings. It is not the same as inviting a friend into a real-time co-op party.

You can encounter someone else’s character without entering a live party. Their character appears with the dialogue and behaviour set up for those meetings.

UNDERDEEP beginner guide: your first session

For your first session, explore manually, mark places you want to revisit and compare the equipment you find. Once you’re comfortable with your skills, try automated exploration and see how your character gets on.

If you played the free demo, the developer confirms that its save data carries automatically into the commercial release. See our UNDERDEEP demo save transfer guide for the announced transfer process.

Jobs, mapping, equipment, skills and karma all feed into the same adventure. Use this UNDERDEEP beginner guide as a starting point, then keep experimenting with your own character rather than trying to copy somebody else’s ideal build.
