HyperX was kind enough to send us over a review unit of their latest wireless headset: The Cloud Stinger 2. So is it worth your time, or should you take a pass on this one?

HyperX Cloud Stinger 2

Firstly, I have to say the HyperX Cloud Stinger 2 feels pretty cheap. When I took it out of the box, I was actually immediately concerned that this was going to be a waste of time.

However, after using the headset for a few days it does what it needs to do without giving me any problems. It’s easy to connect to your console with a wireless dongle that plugs into a USB-A port, but it is lacking a 3.5mm headphone jack which was surprising, albeit not a massive deal since the entire point of the headset is its wireless capabilities.

The audio quality of this headset is pretty much on par with other HyperX headsets that I’ve used in the past, and I’d say it sounds pretty good. They don’t sound tinny and they get loud enough to where you don’t have to strain to hear what you’re listening to. The HyperX Cloud Stinger 2 isn’t going to blow anybody away in terms of their sound quality, but let’s be honest — these headphones aren’t meant for audiophiles.

Going back to build quality, I really really dislike the power button and the volume rockers on this headset. The power button feels mushy and I struggle to even know when I’m actually pressing it, and the volume rocker feels pretty much the same. There’s an ever-so-slight “click” when you’re using the volume rocker, but it’s barely noticeable unless you’re moving it incredibly slow.

The built-in microphone plays an audible beep when it’s activated and deactivated which, in theory, would be helpful to know when your microphone is on or off, but in practice it’s just really annoying. If you go just the slightest bit too slow when bringing down or stowing the microphone, the beep will just keep going off like it doesn’t know what you’re doing and it’s just really annoying.

In terms of quality, the microphone is about what you’d expect from a built-in headset microphone. It’s nothing mindblowing, it’s pretty overwhelmingly average and muddled.

Overall, yeah the HyperX Cloud Stinger 2 wireless gaming headset is a pretty decent pick-up for about $100. It’s got its issues, but if you’re not looking to spend $200-400 on a gaming headset, you’re really against being restricted with cables, and you’re not looking for the “best of the best” then yeah, go ahead and try out the HyperX Cloud Stinger 2 wireless gaming headset.
