Spider-Man fans have had a lot to be excited about over the past few months. From the release of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, to the hype and speculation around Spider-Man: No Way Home which will release on December 16th.

But Sony decided all of the hype wasn’t enough and released the first look for 2022’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One).

What happened in the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse first look?

The first look begins right where the first movie left off with Miles Morales (played by Shameik Moore) lying on his bed looking up at his ceiling where a glowing light appears before Miles with Spider-Gwen’s (played by Hailee Steinfeld) voice calling out to him.

However, the first look shows us what happens directly after the film fades to black. The camera pans out to see an inter-dimensional portal which Gwen proceeds to jump out of, entering Miles’ room and his universe.

Miles is justifiably confused about how Gwen got to his universe. But Gwen shuts him down and asks him to “get out of here.”

The rest of the trailer sees Miles traveling through the same portals Gwen used to enter his universe. Miles goes from universe to universe but we quickly learn that he is escaping a mysterious Spider-Man or Spider-Woman (Spider-Person?). The two exchange blows before the trailer come to an end.

Although the trailer is packed with things for us to speculate about such as how Gwen got to Miles’ universe or what happened to the Spider-People from the first film, I think the best question to start our dissection into the first look trailer is…

…Who is the mysterious Spider-Person?

This isn’t the first time we have seen this mysterious figure. If you recall back to the original movie you will remember a post-credit scene featuring Miguel O’Hara: also known as Spider-Man 2099 (played by Oscar Issac).

Spider-Man 2099 is from the Marvel 2099 universe which ran from 1992 to 1998 and featured futuristic reimaginations of iconic Marvel characters such as Doctor Doom, The Hulk, and The Punisher.

The 2099 universe is ruled by megacorporations like Alcheamax who employs Miguel as an engineer. However, after Miguel sees the results of a DNA altering experiment Alcheamax forced him to perform he decides to resign from the company.

Alcheamax was not happy about this and tricked O’Hara into drinking a concoction laced with a highly addictive drug known as Rapture in an attempt to make O’Hara dependant on Alcheamax to get his fix.

Instead, O’Hara repeated the original failed DNA altering experiment on himself. The experiment freed O’Hara from his addiction but gave him newfound spider powers. Miguel would use his new powers to fight Alcheamax and the other evils that plague Nueva York.

What is Spider-Man 2099’s role in Across the Spider-Verse?

Not a ton is known about O’Hara’s role in the new movie. However, we can find a hint in the aforementioned end-credit scene. During his encounter with the cartoon version of Spider-Man, O’Hara states that “I need you to come with me.”

Perhaps O’Hara is trying to collect various universes’ Spider-people for an important mission to protect the multiverse… or to destroy it. It might just be me but O’Hara appearing to get into a fight with our protagonist Miles Morales just doesn’t make me certain he is a hero.

Spider-Man 2099’s ultimate goal is yet to be seen and will only be answered by watching Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse when it comes out in October 2022.
