Mewtwo is one of the strongest Pokemon in Pokemon Go and the series at large, but what is the weakness of the legendary tier Psychic-Type Genetic Pokemon?

This short guide is designed to inform you enough about Mewtwo and any possible weakness you can target so that you know how to defeat the incredibly powerful Genetic Pokemon.

What is the biggest weakness of Mewtwo in Pokemon Go?

As is typical in any Pokemon title, including Pokemon Go, precisely how strong a Pokemon is and what moves it uses may vary depending on the individual, but there are a few things that remain consistent across all versions of it.

Regardless of the stats, moves and other aspects of a Pokemon, Type is a constant we can use to target a weakness in any Pokemon, even the legendary Mewtwo.

Mewtwo is a pure Psychic-Type (Until it gets the Mega-Mewtwo X form, anyway), which back in the times of Gen I was quite the effective typing to have, hence Mewtwos reputation. In more modern games like Pokemon Go, we have more ways to fight against pure Psychic types – including 3 potential weakness targets.

Mewtwo’s typing makes this section a bit easier than usual, so the lists for both resistances and weaknesses might be a bit brief compared to other weakness guides.

Mewtwo resistances

  • Fighting
  • Psychic

Mewtwo weaknesses

  • Bug
  • Dark
  • Ghost

So, we now know to avoid Psychic and Fighting-Types. But we also have three weaknesses, so which of those is the best to use against Mewtwo? Well, lets go take a look at what Mewtwo can do in battle and figure that out next.

What moves can Mewtwo use in battle?

Fast Attacks
  • Confusion (Psychic)
  • Psycho Cut (Psychic)

Additionally, Armoured Mewtwo can use Iron Tail.

Charged Attacks
  • Flamethrower (Fire)
  • Focus Blast (Fighting)
  • Ice Beam (Ice)
  • Psychic (Psychic)
  • Thunderbolt (Electric)
  • Hyper Beam (Normal)
  • Psystrike (Psychic)
  • Shadow ball (Ghost)

Armoured Mewtwo instead uses these moves:

  • Dynamic Punch (Fighting)
  • Earthquake (Ground)
  • Future Sight (Psychic)
  • Rock Slide (Rock)
  • Psystrike (Psychic)

Going off all that, there’s a lot of potential moves to plan for. Of course, you might not find any attacks that hit your Pokemon for super-effective damage purely by chance, but why even take the risk if we can plan around it?

Ghost-Types are good in general versus Mewtwo, but access to Shadow Ball gives Mewtwo an effective response to them. Likewise Dark types are vulnerable to his Fighting-Type Focus blast. Finally, Bug-Types are vulnerable to Fire-type, which Mewtwo can also use via Flamethrower.

This means that typical Mewtwo can plan for any weakness you can exploit with at least one move, so your best bet is probably using Dark-Type Pokemon, as they will be immune to Mewtwos fast attacks, while only Focus Blast is a major threat to them in Pokemon Go.

Countering Mewtwo in Pokemon Go – Summary

Mewtwo is a complex beast to beat, while it does have a few possible weakness options to target, it also has at least one super effective response to each of them. With that in mind, your best bet becomes Dark-Type, as while Mewtwo does have a counter-move for it, you are entirely immune to both of Mewtwo’s Fast Attacks and still deal 160% damage.

Now, with what weakness to exploit to defeat Mewtwo in Pokemon Go covered, we’ve discussed this topic as much as is needed. If you’d be interested, you can find further Pokemon Go articles, stories, and guides on The Click right here, and more pieces written by me personally here.
