Steelix is the fearsome evolution of the Gen-I Rock Snake Pokemon Onix, but how exactly do you get Steelix in Pokemon Go? What item do you need?

Fortunately, this will be a pretty easy question to answer, and players will only have to choose between Steelix and one other Pokemon for this particular evolution item, so let’s get right into it.

How to get Steelix in Pokemon Go

As with any other item-locked evolution, you’ll need to fulfil two separate requirements to get Steelix in Pokemon Go. First of all, of course, you’ll need an Onix to get started so that you can evolve it into Steelix in the first place.

Unfortunately, Onix tends to be pretty rare, so that might take a while. Doubly so, considering you’ll need to capture a fair few of them to reach the 50 candy required to evolve into Steelix.

You can, of course, speed up the candy gathering by using Pinap berries on wild Onix when you do find them, or by using rare candy. Though I’d really recommend saving those rare candies for legendary Pokemon or the like unless you’re very stuck, to be honest.

With the Pokemon and Candy out of the way, next up you’ll be needing a Metal coat, which we’ll talk about next.

While a Metal Coat isn’t the easiest to get on short notice, you have a chance at one every single time you spin a Pokestop, get your seventh-day spin streak reward, or as a reward from research tasks and potentially from gifts.

All of these different sources can build up and if you do these things regularly, you’ll probably have a few of them by the time you need them anyway.

That makes evolving Onix into Steelix somewhat easy in Pokemon Go, as long as you have been doing those things regularly, particularly given that the candy cost isn’t large either. Though even with a low cost, Onix simply isn’t the easiest Pokemon to find.

Is there anything else to know?

Metal Coat is only used for two evolutions in Pokemon Go, so the only real consideration to make before deciding to use it for Steelix is if you’d prefer using it for Scizor instead.

With some of these evolution items, I’d advise you to check up what else to use it on before committing, but the list really is just two Pokemon in this case.

That’s about everything that needs to be said for how to get Steelix in Pokemon Go, really.
