Galarian Ponyta is a regional spin on an old Pokemon Classic, but do you know what the weakness of this Psychic-Type version is?

This shorthand guide is designed to help inform you of the weakness of Galarian Ponyta to help prepare you for raid battles against it before it appears during Pokemon Go’s Ultra Unlock part 3 event.

What is the biggest weakness of Galarian Ponyta in Pokemon Go?

The biggest weakness of Galarian Ponyta in Pokemon Go would be Ghost-Type Pokemon. While Dark-Types fare similarly well, they do have more drawbacks in this matchup than Ghost-Types do, making them an unnecessary risk for the same benefits.

Bug-Type Pokemon make an excellent second choice, as while they only resist one type of attack from Galarian Ponyta, they have absolutely zero weaknesses that Ponyta can make use of.

How did we find the most reliable counter to Galarian Ponyta?

Despite its overall simplicity, the Pokemon series has a very logic-based depth to it, in that every Type has its own set of weaknesses and strengths.

This means that in a game like Pokemon Go, where you sometimes even know what Pokemon you’ll be fighting in advance – in content such as Raids – and with Pokemon having fewer potential moves they can use, you can often make a determination as to what Type will be the best counter option in battle.

For example, if battling against a Psychic-Type like Galarian Ponyta, you have three Types it is weak to that you can use, which are Bug, Dark and Ghost. If Galarian Ponyta has moves that can counter 2 of those, but not the third Type, then we know which is the best for this matchup.

Bug-Types will their enhanced damage with the added benefit of resisting Low Kick. Dark-Types boast an immunity to both Psychic-Type attacks but will take a serious beating from both Play Rough and Low Kick, making them a big risk.

Ghost-Types meanwhile will entirely ignore Low-Kick due to their Fighting-Type immunity and have the same interaction with Swift, but otherwise take normal amounts of damage from the rest.

Weakness and counters Summary

Your best bet here is likely to be Ghost-Types, with their immunity to 40% of Galarian Ponytas attacks they make for an excellent counter choice that is well suited to exploit a weakness or two in Pokemon Go here. That said, Dark-Types do share a similar benefit as they are immune to Psychic type attacks, but will very much struggle against some of Ponytas other attacks.

Meanwhile, Bug-Types are a good second choice below Ghost-Types, boring but effective.
