GTA 6 Xbox preload starts worldwide at 00:00 GMT on Tuesday, 10 November 2026. That is one global start time, not midnight in every country. In the US, the download actually opens on the afternoon or evening of Monday, 9 November.
Grand Theft Auto VI doesn’t become playable until 19 November. The earlier 12 November preload date has been replaced, so use the timetable below and check your console’s power and storage settings before the download opens.
GTA 6 Xbox preload time for every region

| New York (EST) | Monday 9 Nov, 7 p.m. |

If you’re preparing another console, our PS5 preload guide has its separate schedule and automatic-download instructions.
How to prepare GTA 6 Xbox preload
Check that GTA VI is actually preordered on the Microsoft account you’ll use to play. A wishlist entry isn’t enough. Rockstar says automatic updates must be enabled, with the Xbox powered on or in Sleep mode for automatic preloading.
- Confirm that you have a digital preorder under the Microsoft account you use on Xbox.
- Check that your Xbox Series X or Series S is connected to the internet.
- Enable automatic updates in the console’s system update settings.
- Leave it powered on or in Sleep power mode if you want the automatic download overnight.
- Make room for up to 212 GB and check your games library when the preload window opens.
To check the power mode, go to Settings > General > Power options. You can select Sleep there if you want the setup Rockstar names. Keep the console online and let the download start when your region reaches the GMT time above.
Does GTA 6 Xbox preload work in Sleep mode?
Yes. Rockstar specifically supports the GTA 6 Xbox preload in Sleep mode, with automatic updates enabled. Xbox’s Shutdown (energy saving) mode can also receive some overnight updates, according to Microsoft, but Rockstar names Sleep or a powered-on console for this particular preload. Use Sleep if you want to follow its instructions exactly.
Check your internet connection and free storage before leaving the Xbox overnight. It’s also worth reviewing your Sleep active-hours setting if you’ve changed it before, since the console can shut down outside those hours.
How much space do Xbox Series X and S need?
Rockstar says to allow up to 212 GB of free space, depending on your console. That’s a storage requirement, not a confirmed identical download size for Series S, Series X and PS5. You can check your available space under your Xbox’s storage settings.
Games optimised for Xbox Series X|S generally have to run from internal SSD storage or a supported expansion card. A normal external USB drive can be useful for storing or moving files, but shouldn’t be treated as a guaranteed place to launch a current-generation game. Our storage guide explains the difference.
Why isn’t my GTA 6 Xbox preload available?
On 7 November, the missing download is normal: preloading hasn’t started. Check the preorder and installation queue after the time in the table. In New York that’s 7 p.m. on 9 November; in Los Angeles it’s 4 p.m. on the same day.
If the GTA 6 Xbox preload doesn’t begin after it opens, check the purchasing account, internet connection, available space and automatic updates. If Xbox shows an installation error, our Xbox installation stopped guide covers the normal troubleshooting. There is no reason to assume every failed download is a GTA VI-specific bug.
Can a physical Xbox GTA 6 code preload?
Boxed GTA VI Standard Edition copies are expected from retailers on 12 November. They contain a download code, not a game disc. Once you receive the code, redeem it on your console account and download the game; the box itself doesn’t grant access before the retailer supplies it.
Rockstar says Xbox GTA VI download codes are not region-locked. That’s different from the PlayStation country groups. The game still releases on 19 November, and there is no confirmed Xbox One version in Rockstar’s current platform list. See our physical box guide for the exact code rules.
For GTA 6 Xbox preload, the important things are your local conversion of the GMT start, a valid preorder and a console ready to download. Get those sorted ahead of time and the installation can finish well before the 19 November launch.
