GTA 6 PS5 preload opens on Tuesday, 10 November 2026 at midnight in your local time zone. If you preordered Grand Theft Auto VI digitally for PlayStation 5, you can download the files ahead of its 19 November launch. It isn’t an early-access period, so the story remains locked until release.
Older preorder information said 12 November. Rockstar has since brought digital downloading forward to the 10th. Sony now has specific GTA VI steps to help you set it up before midnight.
GTA 6 PS5 preload date and regional times
Rockstar’s 3 November FAQ confirms the GTA 6 PS5 preload begins at 00:00 local time on 10 November in each region. The US, UK, Japan and Australia all use their own midnight. Xbox is different: its download opens at one global GMT time, which can be the previous evening in North America.
| Region | PS5 preload begins |
|---|---|
| UK (GMT) | 10 Nov, 12 a.m. |
| New York (EST) | 10 Nov, 12 a.m. |
| Los Angeles (PST) | 10 Nov, 12 a.m. |
| Tokyo (JST) | 10 Nov, 12 a.m. |
| Sydney (AEDT) | 10 Nov, 12 a.m. |
How to enable GTA 6 PS5 preload automatically
First, check that GTA VI is in your PlayStation purchase history, not just your wishlist. Sony’s GTA VI support guide gives these steps to enable automatic downloads on the account that owns your preorder.
- From the PS5 games home screen, open Game Library > Your Collection and select GTA VI.
- Select its release countdown timer.
- In the included content list, make sure the auto-download checkbox is selected.
- Open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and turn on Stay Connected to the Internet.
- Make sure enough free storage is available before 10 November.
If the checkbox is already selected, leave it enabled. The GTA 6 PS5 preload should then start when the window opens, provided your console has a connection and enough space. You can also use that timer to start it manually after midnight.
Will GTA 6 download in PS5 Rest Mode?
Yes, as long as automatic downloading and Stay Connected to the Internet are switched on. From the PS5 control centre, choose Power > Enter Rest Mode. Turning the console fully off is not the same thing.
If you’re awake at midnight, you can check your preorder in Game Library. A slow download isn’t a release delay. Preloading early is helpful precisely because the file is large and the connection might take a while.
GTA 6 PS5 preload storage space
Rockstar says preloading needs up to 212 GB of free space, depending on the device. Sony asks PS5 owners to clear 212 GB, so check Settings > Storage before the 10th. This doesn’t mean the final downloaded file is exactly that size.
PS5 titles must run from internal SSD storage or a compatible installed M.2 SSD. An external USB drive can store a PS5 game but cannot run it directly. If your system drive is getting full, move an older title rather than deleting precious saved data. Our GTA 6 storage guide covers the options.
Why is the GTA 6 PS5 preload missing?
On 7 November, seeing a countdown rather than Download is normal because preloading hasn’t started. After midnight on the 10th in your time zone, open GTA VI in Game Library and check the timer for an option to start the download.
If the GTA 6 PS5 preload appears under Downloads/Uploads but isn’t moving, Sony recommends selecting it, then choosing Pause and Resume. Still stuck? You can select Cancel and Delete for the unfinished download, then return to Game Library and start it again. This doesn’t cancel your purchased preorder. Check the internet connection, free storage and system software too.
What about physical GTA 6 boxes?
Rockstar says boxed Standard Edition copies start reaching retailers from 12 November. They contain a download code, not a disc. Once you receive the code, redeem it through the relevant PlayStation account and download ahead of the 19 November launch. You cannot preload a boxed purchase before you have its code.
PS5 code regions matter. A UK game code must be redeemed on a UK-registered PlayStation account. Check the region if you’re buying from another country. Our physical edition guide explains the difference between the box and digital editions.
Get the GTA 6 PS5 preload ready by checking your preorder, timer, Rest Mode connection and storage now. You can download on 10 November, but the game remains locked until 19 November. Our release date guide covers the launch details.
