It has been 6 years since we last saw anything related to Konami’s horror baby Silent Hill. However, according to the silent hill rumour mill, two silent hill games are rumoured to be in development.

For several years the general sentiment surrounding Konami’s handling of their popular video game franchises has been the focal point of critique. Following the controversial separation with Kojima, and the focus on pachinko gaming earned them disapproving moans from their western fans.

Owing to Kojima’s departure, the Silent Hills project, which was supposed to be the first Silent Hill game since 2012, was scrapped. All we got was a demo that was very promising, but alas far too short. It had the typical Kojima stylings of mind-boggling sequencing and fourth-wall-breaking. It was truly representative of something that could’ve been a game-changer in the atmospheric horror genre.

Although short-lived, the demo was followed by several imitation attempts and many, many statements involving a Silent Hill rumor that had no basis whatsoever… until now.

Twitter user and supposed Konami insider @AestheticGamer1 had this to say.

“Apparent situation is like I’ve been saying since last year, there may be 2 Silent Hill games in dev, one a PS5 game, the other a multi-platform game by two different teams. Now something I know 100% is in 2018 Konami was shopping around for two SH games, one a soft reboot”

This builds on AestheticGamer1’s earlier statement about the Silent Hill rumour on the website ResetEra, which was as follows.

“Someone I know a bit personally who’s a game dev in Japan knows I’m a big horror buff, and let me know in mid-2019 that through some “water cooler talk” among game devs, he had heard a Silent Hill game had started dev at a Japanese studio at the start of the year. This person is an extremely honest sort, only mentioned it to me since we’re friends and knows I love the series and horror stuff, they literally had zero reason to lie about it, and have let me know little other nuggets over time that all end up being true.

In mid-2020, a good acquaintance of mine knew I was talking about the Silent Hill rumors. They didn’t tell me anything specifically, but they are working with Konami on something entirely unrelated to all of this. They just gave me a nudge to let me know they were “mighty positive” something Silent Hill was in the works currently, wouldn’t tell me any more than that (and that’s fair, they have a personal leg in the race), but were fine joining the list of people who know and can corroborate it for me.”

So where does this leave us?

Recently, legendary composer Akira Yamaoka, who was involved in the development of the original Silent Hill games, dropped a hint saying that he’s working on a huge project that is being announced in the summer, and that “I think it’s the one you’re hoping to hear about.” There is very little doubt that the only thing people are hoping to hear about seems to be Silent Hill.

Legendary composer Akira Yamaoka, who recently worked on the score for "The Medium," working on another unnamed project to be revealed in the Summer of 2021. Even though rumors suggest it is a Silent Hill revival, it most likely is not.

While this does generate hype for a Silent Hill revival announcement, the interview wherein Yamaoka made the statement was taken down upon request – presumably of the developers of the project. And while one may think it was Konami who asked for its removal, they have chosen to go on the record and confirm that they did in fact NOT make such a demand. His interview statement, even though it caused a stir, is, unfortunately, most likely unrelated to his involvement in a Silent Hill revival.

Another one of the big three from the original Silent Hill developer team, Masahiro Ito, revealed that he has been working on an unnamed project that has not been announced anywhere yet.

These latest rumours give us a little bit of hope, even though time and time again we are pushed to the edge only to be disappointed. Is there any truth to these Silent Hill rumours? Will we really see a return to our foggy monster-filled paradise?

Only time will tell.
