The PS4 life cycle is coming to an end in 2025

Since the release of the PS5 back in 2020, people have been speculating whether this means the end of the PS4 life cycle or if it will stick for a while more. But now, it seems that the previous generation Sony console will not receive new games from 2025 onwards, according to official information.

The latest Sony Business Segment Briefing revealed some interesting details about their consoles’ selling history and popularity. But more importantly, it showcased Sony’s plans for their consoles in the next few years. By 2025, they won’t be porting any of their new titles to the PS4, focusing purely in their newest console.

The Playstation 4 was released back in 2013, and considering how Sony’s previous consoles had around 10 years of a life circle, this shouldn’t be surprising, as it would happen sooner or later.

Data shows how Sony plans to distribute its future titles. As would be expected, we can see a significant increase in mobile and PC titles, and their main focus will obviously be the Playstation 5. Nowadays, most of their games are still ported to PS4, but they should gradually reduce the number of titles the console will receive.

This doesn’t mean that the PS4 is essentially dead. Playstation 3 consistently received ports for important games, such as Persona 5, Just Dance and NBA up until 2017. In 2018 Fifa 19 was released as its last physical game, and 2020 brought  Shakedown: Hawaii as PS3’s last game to date.

Also, many other titles are still confirmed for the Playstation 4, such as God of War: Ragnarok, No More Heroes III or the recently announced Sonic Frontiers. Big titles such as Elden Ring and Horizon Forbidden West were also present this year, and should be enough for players to keep the console for a little bit more.

The report also showcases how successful the Playstation 5 has been since its release, reaching numbers that they may have never expected in the past. While this is also a result of the gaming industry growing as a whole, the comparison between the PS3 x PS5 revenue is still impressive.

An official statement by Sony should be expected anytime in the next months, officializing the end of the PS4 life cycle. But if you couldn’t get a PS5 yet, don’t worry, as the previous-gen games will still receive support for a few more years to come.

Your old friend will still be relevant for a good while yet.
