Tencent show no sign of slowing down when it comes to world domination of the gaming industry. In 2020 they gained stakes in 31 different companies, and are now continuing that trend into 2021.

It has been announced today that Tencent has acquired a stake in French studio Dontnod, the developers behind Life is Strange and Tell Me Why.

Dontnod is currently raising €40 million ($48.5 million) to help become a completely independent studio and publisher. Tencent has footed €30 million ($36.3 million) of the funding, giving them a minority stake in the studio.

As part of the deal, Tencent will also be able to serve on the company’s board of directors.

Dontnod CEO and chairman Oskar Guilbert announced the partnership saying,

“We are delighted to welcome Tencent as a Dontnod investor. This is a real expression of trust from a key online game leader, which is behind a number of success stories and has invested in several leading companies in the video game industry.

Through this partnership, Dontnod is perfectly positioned to take advantage of the various growth drivers in the video game industry, in particular in China and on mobile platforms, in cooperation with an industry leader. The capital increase announced today will enable us to step up and boost the roll-out of our development plan, which aims to capture more value from our original creations by self-publishing more games.”

2020s Tell Me Why was published by Xbox Game Studios, which did hint as a possible partnership with Microsoft bringing them into the Xbox Game Studio umbrella, but that doesn’t appear to be happening. Dontnod’s next game Twin Mirror was self published.

Since the release of Twin Mirror there hasn’t been any announcements regarding the next titles that are being worked on. But no doubt as the funding is raised, they will be straight back to work on the next title as a completely self-funded studio.
