Super Nintendo World patrons almost stomped by Goombas

Super Mario thumbs up

Super Nintendo World has been a resounding success ever since its opening in March of this year. The brand new section of Universal Studios Japan has attracted all sorts of Nintendo faithful to romp around the immaculately designed Mushroom Kingdom. I’ve yet to go myself but maybe that’ll change after we’re sure we won’t be killed by an unfeeling, unknowable virus that makes you not breathe if you’re unlucky enough.

Given that Japan is restricting entry into the country, the only people who are going to get to enjoy this unique aspect of Universal Studios are Japanese citizens. Well, at least they’ll mostly get to enjoy Super Nintendo World when it’s not trying to kill them.

What goes around, comes around

The Goomba is a humble enemy in video games, having gained iconic status due to its association with superstar character Mario. The concept of the Goomba is simple: it walks around in a simple pattern where you could easily either stomp it or accidentally touch it and die because you underestimated its poisonous skin powers. Generally, Goombas are the lowest rung of Mario enemies and are usually not taken too seriously when compared to other enemies (like those Hammer Bros. fuck those guys).

It seems like they tried getting revenge for the lack of respect they’ve received, according to a video that’s making the rounds on Twitter.

In it, we see some poor employees picking up some Goombas that attempted to murder some passersby that just wanted to enjoy the Yoshi ride. Presumably, the employees are taking the Goombas to Shigeru Miyamoto’s personal torture prison for mascots that don’t know how to behave. You gotta respect the attempt though, even if it was attempted murder at the end of the day.

With the announcement that Super Nintendo World is going to be coming to Universal Studios Hollywood, it would behoove some of you Americans to be aware of pissed-off Goombas. In all seriousness, this sort of thing isn’t uncommon with newly added attractions, as you’re more likely to have some shenanigans that were overlooked by the engineers. Even if things got shut down for a bit because of the murderous Goombas, this section of the park is still gonna be a hotspot for tourists and fans alike.

It’s great that we’re getting more of a permeation between video games and more immersive entertainment like amusement parks. My hope is that with the introduction of Super Nintendo World to Hollywood that Nintendo gets wise and adds some mature IPs to the section in the future. Can you imagine a No More Heroes live show? It’d probably be incredibly cringy but worth a watch.
