Resident Evil Village was one of the best-selling games of 2021, with it concluding the story of Ethan Winters…or so we thought.

*Spoiler* The end of the game showed the daughter of Ethan and Mia all grown up and in possession of Psychokinesis powers, and she will star in the upcoming Shadow of Rose DLC.

A new expansion pack for Resident Evil Village is set to release later this month, but a recent update to prepare for it has completely broken the game.

Ahead of the release of the Winter’s Expansion on October 28th, which will include the Shadow of Rose DLC, the main story playable in third-person for the first time, and three new characters for the Mercenaries mode, Chris Redfield, Heisenberg, and Lady Dimitrescu, Capcom released a new update for Resident Evil Village on Steam.

Unfortunately, this update has seemingly completely broken the game, with many players now unable to launch it without receiving an error message. Other users have even reported save files not working and sometimes just disappearing entirely.

The main problem…you can’t launch games on Steam if there is an update pending, and you can’t remove updates, meaning that players can either update the game and hope for the best or leave the game with the update waiting to download but being unable to play it.

Earlier this year Capcom released next-gen updates for Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 7, adding new features such as ray tracing. This update broke aspects of the game for speedrunners, and it caused Capcom to release both versions of the game and give players the choice as to which version they want to install.

With the release of the Winter’s Expansion later this month, we’d like to hope that Capcom is working in overdrive to fix this issue and make the game playable again for PC gamers.

Update: Capcom is working on a fix

While writing this post, Capcom published a message on the Steam page for Resident Evil Village, acknowledging the patch’s issue and that they are working to resolve it.

“After installing the latest patch, the following has been observed:
?A message appears that mentions the need to restart the game
?Game crashes

We apologize for any inconveniences this may have caused.
We are currently working hard to fix this issue, please give us some time to have the issue is resolved.

Once again, we apologize for the inconvenience.”

It does look like the issue should be fixed in time for the Winter’s Expansion and Shadow of Rose DLC, which will launch across all platforms on October 28th.

In the meantime, if you’re wanting to play the game and get reacquainted with it ahead of the new expansion, there is a method that seems to work for most players and allows them to jump back into Resident Evil Village.

Many players have reported that the game will begin working again by refunding the Winter’s Expansion DLC and uninstalling it.

While this means that you technically don’t own the Shadow of Rose DLC anymore, it can work as a temporary measure until Capcom releases an official patch. Then you can just purchase the Winter’s Expansion again before it releases.
