Hogwarts Legacy features a number of puzzles requiring you to lead a moth back to their picture frame, introduced with the quest like a moth to a frame.

While the like a moth to a frame quest is not required to do these puzzles as you find them, it is a good start to introduce you to how to solve them.

Be aware that if you intend to solve all the Moth portrait puzzles throughout the game, you’ll need to do this sooner or later regardless, as it does feature one of the puzzles as part of the quest.

Like a moth to a frame quest guide

Like a moth to a frame is one of the earliest available bits of side content in Hogwarts Legacy. You can start it from the Central Hall region of Hogwarts around the same time as you pick up basic spells such as Accio, by speaking to Lenora Everleigh, a Hufflepuff student studying a painting frame on the wall.

At the start of the quest, she informs you that’s trying to figure out the mystery of the painting frame herself, and mentions that it seems to react to Lumos.

This is the only real hint you need for these puzzles in Hogwarts Legacy, as casting Lumos near the frame will reveal the picture it hides. These paintings will then, as they do in this quest, guide you to a nearby location.

In like a moth to a frame specifically, the painting directs you down the nearby stairs – adjacent fo the Floo flame location for the Potions classroom. Casting Lumos in this area will lure a small moth to your wand, provided you are close enough to the moth with the spell active. The moth itself is otherwise found relaxing on the wall directly next to the side of the stairs.

With the moth following you, walk back to the portrait again. Note that as long as you have the Lumos spell active, it will continue to follow you, even when you’re back at the portrait.

De-activate Lumos when close to the portrait and the moth will then return to it, completing the puzzle, causing the painting frame to disappear in front of you. All that’s left to do now is go back to Lenora and speak to her, confirming you’ve solved the mystery of the painting frame for her.

There are plenty of other moth portrait puzzles throughout Hogwarts castle in Hogwarts Legacy, but only this one is needed for the introductory quest.
