Can’t figure out whether or not you can play Valheim with friends? We’ve got you covered.

So, you and your friends purchased Valheim, but you can’t figure out how to set up co-op. Don’t worry, we’ll teach you how to set up servers so you can play Valheim with friends in no time. While it is an arduous, unnecessary procedure, it thankfully does not take that long.

There are a couple of ways you can co-op in Valheim, thankfully…

Co-Op In Valheim Is Easy!

The easiest way to do it would be for you and your friends to join the same community server. However, this would put you in a world with other random people. But if you want to play in a private server with your friends, there are two ways.

The first, and easier way, is to set up a local private server. In order to do this you need to first create your character, then click on ‘Start Game’ (you should be on it by default), and then click ‘New’.

It will open a pop-up box where you can type in a name for the world you and your friends will be playing in and an option for including a world seed.

This is the easy, direct way to set up a server for you and your friends. You can even set a password to make it private. The drawback of this method, however, is that you can only co-op when playing together.

The server will only be online while you are online. Your friend won’t be able to access the world on their own. If this is okay with you, then this is the best method to co-op.

The second way is to set up a dedicated server for you and your friends that any of your group can access at any time. For this, you will need to go through a dedicated server set up guide.

This method also requires hardware that can run Valheim and remain on at all times and a stable internet connection so that the server can be hosted at all hours.

This requires some understanding of port-forwarding, firewall rules, and programming code. Don’t be intimidated, we have a detailed guide on how to set it all up.
