Are Valheim Servers Region Locked?

Last Updated on: 19th February 2021, 07:50 pm

I’ll be the first to admit, a game suddenly surging to incredible popularity in just a week or two always leaves me a bit skeptical on its staying power. I thought Valheim might just be a fad that showed up and died down pretty quickly, but the Steam Early Access title has already amassed 3 million downloads despite not being free to play. Some of my friends on Discord and the like are even starting to pick it up. With that being said, people are wondering if they can play the game with their friends all around the world. Can they? I’ll make sure you have everything you need to know about whether or not Valheim servers are region locked.

Well, the verdict is more complicated than initially assumed. In my research, very few people are actually talking about this outside of the Valheim Reddit. Additionally, some people seem to be having issues connecting to servers with their friends while others are able to join freely. Some are able to join through Steam’s client while others need to manually input the server ID or even use a VPN.

So are the Valheim servers region locked? No, but Valheim may just be having issues like many early access games tend to do. Hopefully we will get some full transparency from the developers on this issue, as it appears seemingly random who is and isn’t having issues. But one thing is for sure: some Valheim players are indeed playing with their friends worldwide without the need of a VPN.

Let’s hope all these odd occurrences are explained and the ever increasing 3 million large player base continues to enjoy the world of Valheim!

For those unaware, like I and many others were not long ago ourselves, Valheim is a game that became a smash Early Access hit, amassing 3 million players in only about two weeks of being on Steam. The rise of Valheim is starting to feel less crazy when one considers all the other games which have absolutely exploded in popularity ever since COVID-19 hit. While it kept us in lockdown, its certainly given people a ton of time to play games with their friends, and we’ve seen 2020 have sudden smash hits pop out of nowhere.

Similar to other open world games of its ilk like Rust and the like, you as the player drop in a world of Vikings and monsters with naught but the clothes on your back and the drive to survive. Find items, build a shelter, and take arms to the monsters that inhabit the realm with you and your friends! With its surge of popularity and ever increasing player base, I’m sure you can find friends or fellow travelers to accompany you on your journey.
