Rope is a fairly commonly found early game item in Terraria, but how can you make good use of this abundant resource?

How to use Rope in Terraria

Rope, like many tools, has a fair few possible uses in Terraria. While you can use it for many creative house building purposes, it is best used as a supportive item to make exploring that bit safer.

By placing a stack of rope in your Hotbar you can place it like other blocks. However, rope is not a solid block and be moved through. Rope can instead be grabbed and used to descend and ascend at will, provided nothing knocks you off it.

This makes rope excellent in scenarios where you aren’t sure of the depth involved. You can simply click above the fall with the rope selected to place the top piece of rope. Then each further click will add an additional piece to the rope, as it unfurls downwards.

This allows you to create a long chain of rope you can use to descend fairly safely into the area below you, without risking just blindly falling into the darkness in the early game where you might not have any tools to survive a potentially long fall.

You can also place torches on the way down this way, before starting to fall, which allows you to greatly reduce the chance of taking an unexpected fall and dying. That enables you to avoid dropping coins or items somewhere that’ll be hard to recover from.

In other words, don’t sell that rope off you found in a chest unless you’re confident you won’t have any accidents. It’ll probably save you a lot more money then you’ll make from selling it when you go caving.

And if not, well you can always use it in a hellevator or a bossing arena to quickly get around later on.
