Whether you’re a casual fan of the series, or a hardcore, shiny-hunting, IV-grinding pro, you probably have a favourite Pokemon.

No matter how cool a Pokemon’s typing or moves are, nothing quite makes a Pokemon a fan favourite like aesthetics.

Here, I’ve listed – in no particular order – 11 of the best-looking Pokemon for you to feast your eyes upon. (And maybe add to your next team!)

Mega Rayquaza

Rayquaza was already cool enough before it gained a Mega Evolution in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

Add in tendrils of light, meaner looking face-blade-things, and a bunch of new patterning and gemstone adornments to this Dragon/Flying-type’s plated armor, and you’ve got yourself one of the most visually-pleasing Pokemon in the series.

Don’t even get me started on the shiny, which trades all the army green colour for a solid black.

Chandelure

I acknowledge my bias: Chandelure is my favourite Pokemon. It’s hard to deny, however, that this Ghost/Fire-type Pokemon’s ethereal purple soul flames and black iron body look really well-executed.

Chandelure stands out to me as a marker of Gen V’s potential. Not all “inanimate object” Pokemon look as terrible Gen V would have you believe, and Chandelure is testament to that.

Metagross

Steel-type Pokemon are actually fairly well-designed across the board, and the behemoth atop the Steel fashion pyramid is Metagross – especially its silver and gold shiny variant.

The classic blue and silver Steel/Psychic robot hovercraft war machine is a visually intimidating addition to any team, and a capable Pokemon in its own right.

Lunala

Bats are cool. Space is cool. Space bats are really cool. Lunala is the cover legendary of Pokemon Moon, and in my opinion, edges out Sun’s mascot, Solagleo by a wide margin.

This Psychic/Ghost Legendary Pokemon has a royal purple and gold colour scheme that lends itself very well to Alola’s night sky, and it’s hard to decide whether Lunala looks more lethal, or gorgeous.

Togepi

When Gen II rolled around, the designers at every team involved with Pokemon’s art style were faced with a conundrum: can we make something cuter than Pikachu? Enter: Togepi.

Round, squishy, and dressed in an eggshell, it’s tough to ignore just how heart-wrenchingly adorable this pure Fairy-type Pokemon is.

One of Misty’s signature partners in the anime as well, Togepi has a solid cover letter to go alongside that adorable face.

Greninja

A starter made the list? And it wasn’t Charizard? Cue the outrage.

There are a plethora of ninja-inspired Pokemon, but none are so beloved as Greninja, the Water/Dark Pokemon that was introduced in Gen VI.

The tongue as an infinity scarf is a cool idea, and Greninja’s entire design just screams “speedy, slick Pokemon.”

Darkrai

Harbinger of nightmares and mortal enemy of Cresselia, Darkrai is among the greatest examples of Dark-type Pokemon in the series.

The shadowy form of this creature grants it a veil of fear, a feature it utilizes frequently.

The contrast Darkrai’s black form gives to its silver hair, blue eye, and red collar is particularly well-balanced.

Flygon

Flygon is the closest thing we have to a Bug/Dragon-type Pokemon, one of the few type combinations we have yet to see.

Its actual type combo is Ground/Dragon, and this Gen III Pokemon gained a ton of popularity on its introduction.

The classic red and green colour scheme is readable and simple, while design choices like the diamond wings and tail flaps contrast nicely with and otherwise rounded design.

Talonflame

Every new generation gets another family of bird Pokemon, and Gen VI did it the absolute best.

Talonflame is the final evolution of Fletchling, the Kalos region’s small bird that’s everywhere like Pidgey or Starly.

This time around though, instead of being a boring Normal/Flying-type, Talonflame is Fire/Flying, and sports a falcon-like shape with an awesome colour scheme.

Mimikyu

While Mimikyu’s true form is a shapeless darkness that lives beneath the Pikachu costume, you can’t overlook how incredibly the concept of Mimikyu was pulled off.

Jealous of the affection Pikachu around the world receive, these Ghost/Fairy Pokemon disguise themselves as the series’ mascot in an attempt to covet trust.

In a fight, however, the tricky nature of this Pokemon’s dual types make it a much dirtier fighter than its lighthearted idol.

Eevee

If you ask the question “What is the most Pokemon Pokemon?” 95% of people would say Pikachu. Unfortunately for all of them, they’re wrong, and the answer is Eevee.

A soft, fluffy fox who can evolve into eight different Pokemon and will hopefully one day gain a Ghost-type and Steel-type Eeveelution, this pure Normal Pokemon has been a fan favourite since Gen I, and is the one and only Gen I Pokemon on the list; a testament to its friendly, adorable design.
