Destiny 2: Crossplay is coming in Season 15

When Destiny 2 first came to consoles, we never thought that it would get crossplay with other consoles, let alone PC. And yet, here we are, in 2021, having crossplay be that much closer to being a reality. Ever since the first Destiny, I always wanted a way to play with others on other platforms; I figured that a large population of players would be better than having them sectioned off in their own ecosystems.

When Destiny 2 finally arrived on PC, I was hoping we’d eventually get some form of crossplay between the new PC ecosystem and the console one. Thankfully, we’re right around the corner from it.

Controllers vs Keyboards

I can see it now: millions of controllers vs millions of keyboards. How many of them are gonna be Stadia players?

In this week’s TWAB post, Bungie detailed the nitty-gritty as to how crossplay was going to work for Destiny 2 starting in Season 15. Character names will be organized via a “Bungie Name” which will be consistent across platforms; anyone with particularly colorful names (i.e names with icons) will have them automatically reconfigured to fit in with the new system. The Bungie Name will be generated presumably where you mainly play Destiny, and from there the Bungie name will be consistent across platforms.

Finding friends will also be adjusted, as you’ll be able to search for names by:

  1. Logging on to a specific platform and sending requests from the Roster screen
  2. Searching for friend’s names from the invite screen
  3. Using the new Bungie Friends finder app on https://www.bungie.net/friends

Fireteam Invites will now be handled in-game, which means while you’ll still hear the Steam Notification on PC, you’ll be able to handle the invite from the directory. In addition to the new invite system, you’ll have more privacy settings to curb any harassment you might be enduring. Voice chat won’t be enabled between platforms, but it is in the works to be added at some point after crossplay’s release.

Crossplay at launch will also have matchmaking for PvP be between people of the same platforms, while PvE modes will have a generalized pool to matchmake. According to the TWAB post, this might not be the permanent way matchmaking works. Only time will tell if it changes.

Our new Destiny

With The Witch Queen deep in development, it makes sense that the ecosystem of Destiny 2 increases by adding crossplay to the game. When the PC and Console player bases combine, will we see a seamless merging of ecosystems? More than likely. As the pandemic continues, having more ways to connect through games is always welcome.

Now that we have a better way to play with each other, we can expect Destiny population numbers to rise with the consolidation of the player base. If you’re considering hopping into Destiny now that crossplay is coming soon, I’d say it’s worth giving the free version a shot. With the expanded ecosystem, there will be no shortage of Guardians available to group up and fight alongside.

Greet your new Guardians-in-arms warmly, it’s time to let the weird rivalry between consoles die for good.
