Fortnite Arenas Overtime Storm: New Endpoints, Combat Rooms and How to Adapt

Fortnite Arenas overtime storm no longer ends in the centre of the Combat Room every time. Since update 42.40, the cube-shaped storm closes on a different point each round, anywhere inside the room you’re fighting in. The old strategy of holding the middle and waiting for the final zone isn’t dependable anymore.

Epic has also brought back every Combat Room, so you can revisit the same room and face a different storm finish. This doesn’t send you to another room during overtime. It changes where the safe space ends within the room you’re already playing.

Fortnite Arenas overtime storm: What changed in update 42.40?

When overtime first arrived, the cube always shrank towards the middle. Once you knew a room’s layout, you knew exactly where the last safe position would be. Epic initially limited the feature to certain Combat Rooms as well.

That fixed endpoint has gone. The Fortnite Arenas overtime storm can now finish near another part of the room, including a side or corner. It’s similar to the varying storm endpoints in Battle Royale and Reload, but on the much smaller scale of an Arenas fight. The centre can still be safe in a particular round; it just isn’t guaranteed.

Fortnite Arenas overtime storm positioning tips

You don’t need to abandon the middle entirely. If it gives you a clear angle or useful cover, it’s still a good place to fight from. Just avoid boxing yourself into that position because you expect the storm to end there.

Keep watching how the safe area closes and move before you’re forced into a bad crossing. If the next safe space is closer to one wall, think about how you’ll reach it without exposing yourself to a free shot. Your opponent has to react to the changing zone too, so it’s worth watching their route as well as your own.

Building during overtime is another useful option. Epic enabled it in the earlier 42.30 update. You can use available structures to protect a rotation or hold a position, but it still pays to have a way out. The Fortnite Arenas overtime storm rewards adapting to the actual boundary rather than relying on a memorised endpoint.

Can the Fortnite Arenas overtime storm leave the current Combat Room?

Epic’s change is specifically about the storm’s endpoint within the current Combat Room. The 42.40 notes don’t describe the storm travelling into another Combat Room partway through a round. That isn’t what the varying endpoint means.

There are two separate changes here: all Combat Rooms are available again, and the storm’s final position varies inside whichever room you’re in. Epic has also named the rooms to make them easier to recognise. Knowing the room layout still helps, but memorising a single final storm position no longer does.

Do weapons and healing items make a difference in overtime?

Yes, although update 42.40’s loot changes are separate from the storm change. The current shotgun selection includes the Pump, Sentinel, Iron Pump and Gatekeeper. Assault rifles include the Hammer, Striker and Nemesis, with the Combat SMG and several pistols also available.

Small Shield Potions, Shield Fish, Chug Splashes and Apple Stacks are in the announced consumable pool. Meanwhile, Jellyfish and Slapperoni Pizza are among the vaulted items. A close-range weapon, a chance to restore shields and a route through cover are useful things to think about as the room gets smaller.

Don’t base your next move on an item you don’t have. Check what’s in your inventory and how far you’ll need to travel if the final safe space ends away from you. That is far more useful than treating every round as another fight for the exact middle.

What else changed in Arenas 42.40?

The Stadium now has two leaderboards: a Global Ranked Leaderboard for the wider standings and a session leaderboard for the match you’re currently playing. These are separate views, not a second storm mechanic.

Epic also temporarily reduced Ranked lobbies to 12 players in Solos and eight total in Duos to improve performance. The Fortnite Arenas Ranked player count guide explains those limits, including why eight in Duos means four teams rather than eight.

Does the overtime storm have a new timer?

Epic’s 42.40 notes change the destination of the closing cube, not a published set of timings for each phase. They don’t announce a new exact countdown or storm radius. Keep an eye on the live safe area rather than following a supposed fixed sequence.

The Fortnite Arenas overtime storm is still about surviving the final moments of a fight. What’s different is that the room’s centre is no longer your destination by default. Watch the zone, keep your options open and move when the actual endpoint calls for it.
