While there are several books within the Metal series, we are going to to be talking about the the core Metal series, issues #1-6.

Written by Scott Snyder with art by Greg Capullo, an incredible team known for their Batman run within the New 52 era of DC Comics and Metal only dives deeper into the darkness that is shown within their run such as Court of Owls and Death of the Family.

Never Read Anything Before Dark Knights Metal?

While it always helps to know everything that’s going on prior to what you’re going to be reading but with the references and events within the comic, there isn’t much that wouldn’t be understood so dive right in if it interests you. If you’re a fan of DC in any way, you’ll enjoy these comics and the dark corners we see some of our favorite characters go to, either within themselves or physically.

Personally, I think Metal is the perfect jumping point for diving into the twisted and dark DC Universe, if you’re looking for an excuse to dive in that is.

You’ll encounter everyone from the Justice League to their biggest enemies and even a few other surprises in these pages. Being aware of the events that have plagued the DC Universe before such as every single Crisis event, will give you enough understanding of the premise of this series to be truly captivated throughout.

If you have a favorite character within the DCU, be sure to expect some kind of appearance from them regardless of if they’re a hero or a villain. I say some kind of appearance because Metal left me dropping my jaw several times throughout.

Metal Brings New Fear to the DCU

Dark Knights Metal follows Batman in the middle of a deep mystery that he’s been keeping from a select few and revealing key information to others that don’t even know what to do with it. It’s a series that makes you question Batman’s motives constantly and I found that to be a huge interest for me.

Overall, the plot of Dark Knights Metal follows our heroes coming fist to fist with the most incarnations of Batman every created from his deepest fears. These fears take the form of 7 incredibly powerful twisted and darkest version of the Dark Knight ever brought to paper.

These Dark Knights not only represent Batman as some of his most powerful and feared enemies but renditions of them that are so dark and unpredictable that nobody could know what to expect from their arrival.

While we all know Batman to embrace this darkness that he is and his costume represents, we don’t often see Batman fight with himself, or question every aspect of who he’s ever been the way that we see it within Metal.

Although I do, at times, feel like the evil within Batman to be a little overplayed, Scott Snyder really brought the fear of Bruce Wayne and The Batman to life in new ways with Metal and Greg Capullo and team did an incredible job detailing a lot of new aspects and elements to the already gigantic DC Universe.

Batman isn’t the only one whose fears are brought to life here. We see our trinity of heroes: Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman face things they never even knew they were afraid of.

Every member of the Justice League and other landmarks names in the DCU are affected by this event, showing the true motives of a large potion of these characters in new shades of light and darkness. This is a type of event we’ve never seen or probably expected from DC, but should expect it from a team like this.

For me, I’d have to say Aquaman and Deathstroke really grabbed my attention here and loved the interaction between these two characters in this series and just all the effects of The Dark Multiverse upon Atlantis really intrigued me.

I do have to note as well that every interaction with every Dark Knight with our DC heroes is nothing short of incredible writing and every word pulled me in and wanting more.

Personally, I highly recommend reading at least these core 6 issues of the series. When you do, you’ll get as addicted to this storyline as we have so if you get anything out of this Dark Knights Metal review, let it be that we at The Click highly recommend it.

If you’re a true fan of Metal and the music genre it represents and is inspired by, check out the EP created just for the series featuring Jason Aalon Butler, Chino Moreno, and more. While only released physically on picture disc vinyl, the soundtrack is available digitally.
