Ace Combat 8 Mission 9 looks like a straightforward boss fight until you realise the hull isn’t the target. The Xanthos land battleship can only be stopped by working through its scripted stages. The trick is to protect the unmanned IED vehicles, take advantage of the moments when the battleship slows down, destroy its exposed secondary treads and finally hit the thrusters. The usual sticking points are the IED vehicles and the timed building demolition. Miss either and a good run can unravel.
Operation Ogre Pitfall throws guns, drones, bomb trucks and a moving fortress at you all at once. Strong anti-surface special weapons help with the Land Aegis escorts and battleship armaments. You still need to change priorities when the mission updates; continuing to fire at guns while the IED vehicles or blocking buildings need help is a bad trade.
Ace Combat 8 Mission 9: The Land Battleship Blockade walkthrough
1. Remove the Land Aegis escorts and surface guns
Two Land Aegis vehicles escort the Xanthos at the start. Clear them first. Destroy those first, then hit the airburst guns, vertical-launch systems and other weapon mounts on the main vehicle. LASMs are effective against hardened surface targets; bombs or area-effect weapons can clear clustered armaments faster than single-target attacks. Avoid circling directly over active anti-air batteries for too long.
Tell your wingmen to engage secondary threats while you tackle the targets that actually advance the operation. The battleship’s guns can reactivate between phases, so don’t assume that every weapon you suppressed will remain out of action for the whole mission.

2. Protect the IED vehicles
When the first obstruction forces the battleship to slow, unmanned IED vehicles try to reach its underside. Quadcopters move in to stop them. That’s your cue to drop whatever else you’re attacking. Shoot the quadcopters before they pick off the IED vehicles. Once the IEDs detonate beneath the battleship, its sub-caterpillar treads become vulnerable.
Don’t try to destroy every tread before its marker appears. They become targetable in sequence, alternating between sides of the vehicle. Stay close enough to see the next exposed section, then switch to it immediately. Your window matters, especially if you’re also chasing the hidden Ace condition.
3. Hit the exposed treads before the second slowdown
Continue destroying marked sub-caterpillars as they appear. You can let your wingmen handle some of the swarming drones while you concentrate on the temporary openings. The next slowdown point is Concorde Fort. For Judex, the secondary tread armour must be broken before the battleship reaches this second slowdown line. Don’t mix up breaking the armour with finishing the entire mission.
After the fort is detonated, more hostile aircraft and drones enter the fight. Keep an eye on the battleship’s movement rather than following the fighters too far away. Losing track of the ground objective here makes the final phase of Ace Combat 8 Mission 9 much harder.
4. Demolish the marked buildings, then disable the thrusters
The battleship eventually approaches another set of structures that must collapse in its path. When the remaining building sections become marked targets, fire at them before the battleship crosses that point. Interceptor UAVs and returning weapon mounts are distractions, but the marked demolition is time-critical. Once the buildings are down, clear nearby airborne threats and wait for the next target update.
The final objective switches to the battleship’s thrusters. Destroy both marked thrusters and the vehicle topples, ending the operation. If you reach this stage after protecting the IEDs and clearing the building targets, Ace Combat 8 Mission 9 is almost over.
How to spawn Judex in Ace Combat 8 Mission 9
Judex is a MiG-29A hidden Ace. Finish the campaign first, then replay the mission in Free Mission on Veteran or higher. Destroy every exposed sub-caterpillar tread before the battleship reaches the second slowdown at Concorde Fort. After the next demolition cutscene, Judex arrives with MiG-29As from the northwest coast. Shoot Judex down and finish the mission for the Assault Record.
There are eight secondary treads, four on each side. Follow the exposed TGT markers rather than firing blindly into armoured panels. Getting the armour open before the second slowdown is what matters for Judex.
Ace Combat 8 Mission 9: Medal and failure checks
The Aegis Penetrator medal is a separate challenge requiring all ten Land Aegis ships in Operation Ogre Pitfall to be destroyed. It doesn’t replace the mandatory objective of bringing down the battleship. If you’re pursuing the medal, check the entire map for surviving Land Aegis targets instead of assuming the first two escorts were the lot.
If the IED trucks are destroyed, concentrate on the quadcopters earlier next time. The bomb trucks are what make the treads vulnerable. If it fails later, watch for the newly marked buildings rather than firing at reactivated airburst guns. If Judex never appears, your tread-clear timing before Concorde Fort is the first condition to revisit.
Ace Combat 8 Mission 9 FAQ
Ace Combat 8 Mission 9: Can I destroy the battleship immediately?
No. Several scripted stages expose different vulnerable targets. The IED vehicles, treads, demolitions and final thrusters are part of the required sequence.
Ace Combat 8 Mission 9: Which weapons work well?
LASMs are good against hardened Land Aegis and battleship sections. Bombs and other area-effect weapons can clear clustered mounts. Bring something you can use against drones too, because escorts and timing matter as much as raw damage.
