Ace Combat 8 Mission 12 starts with what looks like a breather: you land at a friendly airfield. Then the alarms start again. An Island in Darkness turns into a defence against aircraft, landing craft and cruise missiles, so you’ll need to change targets every time the radio calls out a new threat. Don’t get drawn into a dogfight while LCACs or missile pallets are closing on the island. The most important late targets are the cruise missile pallets dropped by incoming transports.
The Rapid Dragon Slayer medal is decided during the cargo-plane section. You must destroy the Rapid Dragon weapon system before it releases its cruise missiles. Shooting down missiles after they’re airborne can still save the island, but it won’t fulfil that earlier medal condition. There’s also a separate timed hidden Ace challenge involving eight LCACs.
Ace Combat 8 Mission 12: An Island in Darkness walkthrough
Operation Worker Bee is a defence mission, so your target priority changes with each incoming threat. You begin by landing at the airfield, then preparing for an immediate takeoff. Take a mixed special-weapon loadout if one is available. You only have Baxter supporting you here, so don’t count on the firepower of the full Joker Flight.
1. Get airborne and stop the landing craft
When Ace Combat 8 Mission 12 sends you back into the air, don’t panic about hostile contacts during the takeoff animation. Once you’re flying, intercept the attack aircraft that threaten the base and watch for the approaching landing craft. The enemy LCACs arrive in several groups from different directions. Expand the radar rather than keeping your attention on the first cluster you see.
Standard missiles work against LCACs, but air-to-ground special weapons can remove them faster. If you’re only trying to survive the campaign mission, stop every landing group before the craft reach the island. Don’t spend your entire supply of heavy weapons on distant fighters when there are slower, mission-critical threats approaching the shore.

2. Intercept the bombers from both sides
After the landing-craft waves, bombers approach from the east and west. These are your priority, not the escort fighters. Head towards the closer bomber, get a clean lock and destroy it, then immediately turn for the other. Only deal with the escorts once the main bombing threat is under control. This is where overcommitting to an aerial duel can cost you the whole operation.
3. Destroy the Rapid Dragon pallets
In the final section, a C-130 transport approaches from the northwest and drops a cruise missile pallet. Turn towards it as soon as the transport is announced. Go for the missile pallet as soon as it appears. If you’re trying for Rapid Dragon Slayer, the critical requirement is to destroy Rapid Dragon before its cruise missiles launch. Don’t confuse that with simply destroying a transport after the release.
More cargo aircraft arrive from other sides of the map. Intercept their missile pallets in turn, leaving any irrelevant fighter escorts alone until the cruise missile threat is over. When a pallet has already released missiles, switch to the missiles themselves and shoot them down before they reach the island. The normal mission clear is still possible even if you’ve missed the medal timing.
Keep the wider radar open during this stage. It’s easy to fly too far after one transport and discover another has approached from a different direction. When every incoming pallet and cruise missile is dealt with, the attacking forces withdraw and the mission finishes.
How to earn Rapid Dragon Slayer in Ace Combat 8 Mission 12
The campaign medal is tied to destroying Rapid Dragon before it launches cruise missiles. The safest plan is to start moving towards the first transport’s approach as soon as the bomber phase is resolved, then target the dropped system immediately. Prioritise it above the transport aircraft, fighters and bonus targets. Don’t wait until the missiles are flying. By that stage the Rapid Dragon Slayer condition is already gone, even if you save the island.
If you need the medal and the system gets a launch away, restart the phase rather than continuing to hunt cruise missiles for a medal that requires the earlier interception. You can still finish the story by shooting down the missiles, but the award asks for a faster result.
How to spawn Imber in Ace Combat 8 Mission 12
Imber, a hidden F/A-18F Ace, is a different challenge. Finish the campaign, select Free Mission on Veteran or higher, and destroy all eight enemy LCACs within three minutes of takeoff. They approach from both the northwest and northeast, so a fast sweep and air-to-ground weapons are useful. The Ace appears from the northeast after you meet the landing-craft condition.
On an Imber run, you can leave one early Su-25SM flying temporarily to delay the next phase while you finish the LCACs. Don’t use that tactic during a straightforward first clear unless you’re deliberately controlling the wave timing. After shooting Imber down, finish the mission to secure the Assault Record.
Ace Combat 8 Mission 12 FAQ
Ace Combat 8 Mission 12: What if the cruise missiles have already launched?
Intercept them before they hit the base. That can still complete the operation, but Rapid Dragon Slayer requires destroying the system before launch.
Ace Combat 8 Mission 12: Where do the eight LCACs spawn?
Watch the northwest and northeast approaches. Multiple groups appear, so don’t rely on a single radar sweep. The hidden Ace trigger specifically needs all eight destroyed very quickly.
Ace Combat 8 Mission 12: What equipment should I use?
A mix of air-to-air and air-to-ground capability makes the changes in Ace Combat 8 Mission 12 easier to handle. You’ll fight aircraft, landing craft and palletised cruise missiles in the same sortie, and no single-target weapon covers every job equally well.
