ACE COMBAT 8 Mission 21, The Star-Bound Bird, puts you in charge of keeping the Comona Space Base shuttle launch alive while Sotoan aircraft and two naval fleets close in. The trick is not to chase everything on the radar. Defend the Spruce Goose shuttle and its control centre, clear the attackers that can reach them first, and build the required score before the countdown ends.
Operation Dawn Rising throws several waves at you, so what feels like a tidy air battle at the start quickly becomes a juggling act. Here’s the order to tackle the threats, when it makes sense to resupply, and how to go after the Intact Princess medal and Alienus without losing the actual mission.
ACE COMBAT 8 Mission 21 walkthrough: How to protect the shuttle
The mission has a 15-minute limit. On Pilot difficulty, the required score is 21,000, with different score thresholds on other difficulties. Reaching that number isn’t enough on its own: the shuttle and the control centre must still survive. That’s why a nearby bomber is a bigger problem than a distant fighter offering an easy kill.
ACE COMBAT 8 Mission 21: Best loadout for the mixed threats
Most of the fighting is air-to-air, but the enemy fleets also threaten the base. A capable multirole fighter works well. If your unlocked loadout supports both reliable anti-air special weapons and a ship-killing option such as LASM or LACM, that’s useful for this sortie. Don’t sacrifice all of your air-combat capability just to sink the ships quickly.
There’s an eastern airfield where you can land, resupply and change weapons during the mission. It’s genuinely useful, but only when the next threat wave is under control. Landing while strike aircraft are heading for the shuttle is a good way to turn an otherwise comfortable run into a restart.

2. Clear the opening aircraft and watch the eastern approach
At the start of ACE COMBAT 8 Mission 21, enemy fighters gather to the east and southeast of Comona. Get into the attacking aircraft rather than flying miles after any single opponent. Tell your wingmen to spread their attacks when several targets are available, and keep checking which contacts are actually heading for the launch facility.
Su-34 strike aircraft appear from the east as the mission progresses. These need your attention ahead of ordinary fighter stragglers. You can leave a harmless opponent circling at a distance; you cannot afford to let attackers line up on the control centre or shuttle.
ACE COMBAT 8 Mission 21: When to attack the naval fleets
Two Sotoan fleets advance from the eastern sea. They will bombard the launch site if allowed close enough, so you do need to remove them. The safer rhythm is to thin the immediate air threat, strike one fleet with your anti-ship weapons, and then check the airspace before heading after the second.
Don’t treat destroying the ships as an isolated side quest. Additional enemy aircraft approach from different directions while you’re over the water. If the launch site starts calling for help, break off and intercept them. When the skies are clear again, return to the remaining ships.
4. Make the most of Magnolia’s electronic support
Later in ACE COMBAT 8 Mission 21, the allied Magnolia electronic-warfare aircraft arrive and establish an ESM support area around Comona. Within that support coverage your missiles are considerably more effective. Try to fight around the field while it’s active rather than dragging every engagement beyond it.
Magnolia won’t remain until the finish. Use that window to clean up tougher aircraft and anything still threatening the launch, but keep enough ammunition for the final attacking groups.
5. Split Joker Flight against the late strike groups
Near the closing stretch, A-10C attackers arrive from the north with fighter cover and F-15Es approach from the south. Tasha suggests dividing the squadron. Agreeing to split is sensible: take one attacking group yourself while the other pilots delay the opposite approach.
The northern A-10Cs pose an immediate danger to the launch. Intercept them quickly, then check whether the southern approach needs help. Watch the protected-target indicators, not just your own score. Once the critical attackers are dealt with and the score requirement has been met, the shuttle can lift off as the timer expires.
ACE COMBAT 8 Mission 21: How to get the Intact Princess medal
For the Intact Princess medal in ACE COMBAT 8 Mission 21, the shuttle must launch without taking any damage. A normal mission clear only requires the protected shuttle and control centre to survive; the medal has the stricter no-damage condition. This makes the late strike waves particularly awkward. Clear the attack aircraft before they get firing opportunities, keep the ships from bombarding Comona, and resist the temptation to chase a named ace when an urgent target is closing in.
For the medal, keep checking the shuttle’s status, even when the countdown is almost over. An attack that leaves it alive can still spoil the medal. You can always finish the story first, then return for a cleaner run.
How to spawn Alienus, the hidden ace
Alienus flies an EA-18G Growler. First clear the campaign, then replay this mission in Free Mission on Veteran difficulty or higher. Sink every enemy ship around the island and Alienus appears from the east. The ace’s electronic interference makes missile locks awkward; fighting inside Magnolia’s allied ESM field helps, and gunfire remains an option if you cannot get a clean lock.
This is where ACE COMBAT 8 Mission 21 can become unnecessarily messy. The hidden ace is optional. If your base is in trouble, deal with the attackers first. You can always return for the Assault Record on another run rather than lose the shuttle trying to do everything at once.
ACE COMBAT 8 Mission 21: Common reasons a run fails
If the shuttle or control centre keeps taking damage, you’re probably spending too long away from Comona or letting the Su-34, A-10C or F-15E attack groups through. If the score is short, clear nearby reinforcements rather than chasing low-threat planes to the edge of the map. If you run out of suitable missiles, use the eastern runway when the protected area is safe, not in the middle of an incoming strike.
For ACE COMBAT 8 Mission 21, the useful priority order is: protect the launch facilities, eliminate strike aircraft, stop the ships from getting close enough to bombard, then mop up other fighters for score. Keep that order in mind and the last stretch becomes much easier to manage.
