Godzilla Melee Remastered Multiplayer: Local vs Online Player Limits

Godzilla Melee Remastered Multiplayer lets up to four players fight locally on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, but online matches are limited to two players on those consoles. The original couch-fighting chaos is back, and this time there’s an online option for when your friends can’t come over.

The player limits can be easy to mix up, especially with Atari talking about Melee battles and new matchmaking. Here’s how the local and online options compare, what subscriptions you’ll need and where PC fits in.

Godzilla Melee Remastered Multiplayer: Godzilla Melee Remastered Multiplayer player counts

Nintendo UK lists 1–4 players on one Switch 2 and two online. PlayStation’s listing allows 1–4 local and two online on PS5. Xbox identifies 2–4 local multiplayer players, plus solo play, and 2–2 online on Series X|S.

Those are maximums for the modes advertised on each console. You can have a four-monster scrap at home, but the current console listings don’t advertise a four-person online match.

How does four-player local multiplayer work?

Local Versus and Melee modes are meant for people sharing a console, with each player controlling a monster and fighting in a destructible arena. Buildings, landmarks and other bits of the environment can be picked up and thrown, making a free-for-all look wonderfully chaotic.

Nintendo says that every participant needs a compatible controller, and additional controllers may need to be purchased separately. Godzilla Melee Remastered Multiplayer is an excellent fit for couch sessions, where the full four-player count is available on the supported console versions.

Godzilla Melee Remastered Multiplayer: How do two-player online matches work?

Atari has added online multiplayer and matchmaking to the remaster. Switch 2, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S store pages all cap online matches at two people, so think one-on-one kaiju showdowns rather than four friends joining the same online arena.

Exact menus for private invitations and matchmaking haven’t been demonstrated in a complete released guide. The online mode is advertised, and the Godzilla Melee Remastered Multiplayer numbers are already spelled out on the console storefronts.

Nintendo Switch Online, PlayStation Plus and Xbox subscriptions

Switch 2 requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership for online play. The PS5 store lists PlayStation Plus required. Xbox requires a qualifying Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate tier for console online multiplayer.

These memberships apply to console internet matches, not a requirement to fight a friend sitting beside you. If you’re planning a four-player local party, controllers and a supported console are the important purchases.

What multiplayer modes does PC Steam have?

Steam lists online PvP, shared-screen play and Remote Play Together. Atari also describes local Versus and Melee modes for the game more broadly, but Steam doesn’t state the same exact native online player number in its public feature list.

Remote Play Together is Steam’s way of sharing a supported local game over a network, and it isn’t evidence of cross-platform matchmaking with Switch 2, PS5 or Xbox. Check the actual PC matchmaking options when the game releases on 3 November.

Godzilla Melee Remastered Multiplayer: Is Godzilla Melee Remastered Multiplayer crossplay?

Atari confirms local multiplayer and new online matchmaking, but it hasn’t specified a combined cross-platform player pool. Being able to play online on a console doesn’t automatically mean you can challenge friends who bought another version.

For now, plan on friends using the same platform for online matches unless Atari announces support between systems. Crossplay, cross-platform parties and shared account progression are separate features, none of which have been established in the official announcement.

Can you play by yourself?

Yes. Atari advertises additional single-player campaigns for each kaiju and a redesigned unlock system for monsters, arenas and gallery items. That gives you something to work through when the online lobby is quiet.

Godzilla Melee Remastered Multiplayer also offers eight destructible locations with daytime and nighttime variants. Practising the different monsters’ melee strings, energy attacks and Rage Mode strikes in solo play should help before a competitive match.
