Star Wars Galactic Racer Ability Upgrades: How to Upgrade Abilities

Star Wars Galactic Racer release date and time

Galactic Racer ability upgrades can change far more than a number beside an ability name. Several branches alter how a tool behaves, who it can affect or what extra status it applies, which means two versions of the same base ability can support very different Tour builds. Because the campaign rebuilds temporary equipment from run to run, the useful question is not simply which upgrade is strongest, but which branch improves the problem your current vehicle and Racer Style are actually facing.

The upgrade screen can also be misleading if you expect every branch to sit permanently available in one menu. Galactic Racer ability upgrades are woven into the same run economy as new abilities, Parts and other improvements, while some options only become relevant after more of the campaign has been cleared. That creates a real choice between widening the loadout and investing more deeply in something already working, especially when Credits and reward opportunities are limited during a strong Tour.

To get Galactic Racer ability upgrades, obtain an Ability Pack while the relevant ability is already part of your available build. Hibi sells Ability Packs at planetary paddock stops for 2,500 Credits in the launch build, and packs can also be earned from events. Once the basic version has been acquired, later packs can offer upgraded versions or branches that replace it with a stronger effect. The upgrade does not sit beside the original as a second copy; choosing it changes the version you are using.

All nine abilities can be developed through Galactic Racer ability upgrades, and the normal maximum is Level 3. The launch trophy Record-Setting Pit Droid Team requires taking one ability to its maximum level, which means obtaining two Galactic Racer ability upgrades after the base version. That makes one focused ability much easier to max during a run than trying to improve four different tools evenly.

How to buy Ability Packs from Hibi

  1. Reach a new planet and enter the paddock before committing to the next event branch.
  2. Visit Hibi’s Shop and check whether an Ability Pack is in the current stock.
  3. Spend 2,500 Credits if the pack is worth more to the build than the available Parts or stat upgrades.
  4. Choose a new ability if you need another active slot, or select an upgraded version of an ability already in the build.
  5. Read the full replacement effect before confirming because branch upgrades can change how an ability is meant to be used.

Hibi’s stock is part of the randomised Tour economy, so Galactic Racer ability upgrades are not a fixed menu where every branch can be bought on demand. If the upgrade you want is missing, keep the current ability and look for another pack later in the run. Galactic Racer ability upgrades are therefore something to plan around, not a guaranteed shop purchase at each paddock. Spending all Credits chasing one specific branch can leave the vehicle underdeveloped in Parts, repairs or base stats.

What do the main upgrade branches change?

The best Galactic Racer ability upgrades often change behaviour rather than adding a small percentage. Concussion Mine can progress into multi-mine versions or a Freezing branch. Ion Bolt can become Concussive Bolt, adding Concussed to the normal Disrupted effect, or Multi-Bolt, which can target several nearby rivals. That makes the upgrade choice a build decision: one branch concentrates pressure on a single opponent while another is designed for a crowded pack.

Defensive Galactic Racer ability upgrades have the same kind of branching. Shield can become a Surging Shield that turns impacts into speed or an Impact Shield that punishes opponents involved in collisions. Autopilot can become Overcharged Autopilot for a longer automated section with Overcharged, or Surging Autopilot for a speed-focused version. Surge itself can lean into overtakes or contact, while Vent gains branches built around stronger cooling or offensive status effects.

Useful Galactic Racer ability upgrades to look for

  • Concussion Mine II and III: increase the number of explosives, making the ability stronger when defending a lead.
  • Freezing Concussion Mine: adds a lingering Frozen area, changing the mine from a single hit into track control.
  • Concussive Bolt: adds Concussed to Ion Bolt’s Disrupted effect for stronger single-target interference.
  • Multi-Bolt: spreads Ion Bolt across several nearby opponents and is much more useful inside a pack.
  • Overcharged Autopilot: extends the automated driving window and adds Overcharged, useful on hard track sections.
  • Overtaking Surge: rewards clean passes by extending and strengthening Surging.
  • Impact Shield: turns defensive contact into System Malfunction pressure on rivals.

When should you upgrade instead of taking a new ability?

Choose Galactic Racer ability upgrades when the current tool is already solving an important problem. If Vent is the reason a Ramjet build can survive long straights, improving Vent is usually more valuable than adding a fourth ability that competes for the same Battery. If Shield is keeping a fragile Speeder Bike alive, a stronger Shield branch may protect the whole run better than another offensive gadget.

Take a new ability instead when the loadout has an obvious gap or when you are chasing the four-active-abilities achievement. A build with only offensive tools may need Shield or Status Scrubber before it needs a second level of Shockwave. A defensive build that cannot pressure rivals may benefit more from Ion Bolt or Concussion Mine than from making its existing protection marginally stronger with more Galactic Racer ability upgrades.

Which upgrades are tied to campaign progression?

Not every Galactic Racer ability upgrades branch is available from the opening Tour. Launch guides and trophy routes confirm that some ability content is unlocked through Sebulba’s Tales of Podracing, including the account-level Ion Bolt route through the seventh Tale, Fear and Respect. The campaign therefore matters even if your immediate goal is buildcraft rather than story completion.

Keep clearing Tales of Podracing when they appear, then continue checking Hibi’s Ability Packs on later Tours. That combination is also the best route to widen the pool of Galactic Racer ability upgrades available on future attempts. That combination expands the pool and gives repeated chances to see higher versions. A failed Tour will remove the temporary build you assembled, but the wider progression unlocks mean future runs can start from a broader set of possibilities.

How to max an ability efficiently

For the maximum-level trophy, pick one of the Galactic Racer ability upgrades that appears early and keep it equipped. Prioritise Ability Packs during that Tour until you have selected two upgrades for the same base ability. Do not replace the ability with an unrelated tool simply because a flashy pack appears, and remember that an upgrade branch still counts as improving the underlying ability.

A focused route is especially effective with Shield, Vent, Autopilot or Surge because those tools remain useful across several event types. Once one ability reaches its maximum, you can be more experimental with later Galactic Racer ability upgrades and build around the route, vehicle and Racer Style that the next Tour gives you.
