Galactic Racer abilities sit at the centre of the game’s run-based racing builds, but the launch campaign does not present them like a conventional skill tree with a neat checklist. A tool that appears during one Tour can shape the whole vehicle setup, then be absent from the next attempt while a different Racer Style pushes the build in another direction. That makes it easy to confuse temporary access, permanent progression and the version of an ability currently fitted to Shade’s repulsorcraft.
The launch system also mixes offensive, defensive and utility effects with a separate Crash Ability, so collecting the names is only half of the useful answer. Galactic Racer abilities interact with Battery use, Racer Styles, Tour rewards and campaign progression in ways that change which option is worth taking at a paddock. Before spending Credits or choosing a route for a single unlock, it helps to understand the full launch pool and the different ways those tools enter a build.
Galactic Racer abilities: all nine and how unlocks work

There are nine Galactic Racer abilities in the launch build: Concussion Mine, Vent, Shockwave, Status Scrubber, Ion Bolt, Ion Blast, Shield, Autopilot and Surge. Most active abilities enter a Tour through an Ability Pack from Hibi’s Shop or through an event reward. Racer Styles can also place a specific ability into your starting setup, while selected campaign progression gates can make particular abilities available more broadly. Ion Blast is different from the normal active slots because it is a Crash Ability that triggers around a wreck and reset. Those Galactic Racer abilities cover very different jobs, so the first useful unlock depends on what your current Tour is missing.
| Ability | Base effect | Useful for |
|---|---|---|
| Concussion Mine | Drops a proximity explosive that applies Concussed and System Malfunction | Punishing racers following your line |
| Vent | Applies Cooled and reduces Ramjet heat | Long Ramjet use and redlining builds |
| Shockwave | Pushes nearby racers away and applies System Malfunction | Crowded packs and defensive space |
| Status Scrubber | Removes negative status effects and can restore energy when it clears one | Recovering from disruption, burning or other debuffs |
| Ion Bolt | Locks onto the nearest target and applies Disrupted | Reliable targeted interference |
| Ion Blast | Crash Ability that disrupts nearby racers and boosts your reset speed based on targets hit | Making a wreck less costly |
| Shield | Applies Shielded for ten seconds | Survival, contact and dangerous track sections |
| Autopilot | Drives automatically for ten seconds while reducing Ramjet heating | Unfamiliar corners and difficult track sections |
| Surge | Applies Surging for ten seconds, extends through overtakes and ends on impact | Clean overtaking and speed builds |
How do you unlock Galactic Racer abilities?
The main repeatable route for Galactic Racer abilities is the Ability Pack. Hibi sells Ability Packs during planetary paddock stops, and launch-day testing places the normal shop price at 2,500 Credits. Packs can also appear as event rewards, so a route that pays an Ability Pack can be worth choosing when the current build lacks protection, disruption or cooling. When a base ability is available, a pack can offer it as a new addition to the current Tour instead of another passive Part or stat increase.
Racer Styles create a second route into Galactic Racer abilities. Survivor starts with Shield, while Tenacious is associated with Autopilot. Brawler can begin with Ion Bolt even though other styles may need the account-level Ion Bolt unlock before they can add it through a pack. This is why two players at the same point in the story can begin a Tour with different tools before Hibi has sold either of them anything.

Which ability has a specific campaign unlock?
Ion Bolt is the clearest launch-day example of a Galactic Racer abilities unlock tied to named campaign content. The released trophy route confirms that Ion Bolt must be unlocked through Sebulba’s seventh Tales of Podracing event, Fear and Respect, before the Tech Expert Racer Style can equip it from an Ability Pack. Brawler can still start with Ion Bolt as part of that style’s preset identity, so do not assume the presence of an ability on one style means every other style can immediately roll it from Hibi.
Some specialised variants and later options also depend on Tales of Podracing progression. That means a player trying to complete the Galactic Racer abilities collection should keep talking to Sebulba and clearing his Tales rather than treating those events as optional nostalgia. The campaign uses those races as part of the broader unlock pool, not merely as separate score challenges.
How many abilities can you equip at once?
A normal build can equip up to four active Galactic Racer abilities at the same time, plus one Crash Ability. Ion Blast occupies the Crash Ability role and does not count toward the four active slots. The distinction matters for the Four Arms Would Be Useful achievement, which specifically requires four normal abilities equipped simultaneously. If that is your goal, take new abilities from packs before spending every pack on upgrades to the first one or two tools you found.
Battery is the limiting resource for repeated use of Galactic Racer abilities during a race, so simply filling all four slots does not guarantee a strong build. A high-usage setup can burn through energy faster than it can recover it. Parts that improve ability reloads or energy recovery become much more valuable when the build leans heavily on Shield, Ion Bolt, Surge or other frequently triggered tools.
Which Galactic Racer abilities are best early?
For a first campaign clear, defensive Galactic Racer abilities are usually easier to extract value from than a complicated status combo. Shield forgives contact and bad route knowledge, while Autopilot can carry the vehicle through a section you have not yet learned. Vent is excellent once Ramjet use becomes part of your normal pace because cooling lets you stay aggressive without turning every long straight into an overheat gamble.
Offensive Galactic Racer abilities become more attractive once you are comfortable holding a racing line in traffic. Concussion Mine punishes pursuers, Shockwave buys room in a pack and Ion Bolt gives a direct way to disrupt one nearby rival. Surge is strongest when you can avoid impacts, because overtaking extends the effect while a collision ends it. The best choice therefore depends on how the current Tour is failing rather than on one universal tier list.
Do ability unlocks carry between Tours?
The temporary ability loadout assembled during a Tour is part of that run’s build, so losing the Tour does not preserve the exact four-slot setup you were using. Permanent campaign progress still expands what future runs can access through Racer Styles, Tales of Podracing and the wider unlock pool. That separation is central to Galactic Racer abilities: you gradually widen the toolbox, but each Tour still asks you to assemble a working combination from the options that appear.
If you are collecting everything, focus first on story and Tales progression, then use Hibi and event rewards to cycle through the full nine-ability pool. Once all nine Galactic Racer abilities have appeared in usable form, the next layer is upgrading them, because repeated Ability Packs can replace a base version with stronger branches rather than simply giving another copy of the same tool.
