Use Your Old World in Valheim 1.0 and your existing save will still load normally. Iron Gate has confirmed that Use Your Old World in Valheim 1.0 and characters remain playable after the full release, so version 1.0 does not force a wipe or automatically delete years of building, farming and boss progression.

Use Your Old World in Valheim 1.0 is perfectly reasonable if you mainly want to continue your base and head north, but there is one important catch: new terrain generation only applies properly to areas of the map that were never explored before the update.

Do old Valheim saves still work?

Yes. Your old character, buildings, storage, boss kills and world remain where you left them. Updating the game does not convert the save into a fresh world.

How Deep North generation works on an old world

Valheim creates detailed biome content as areas are explored. Unexplored far-north terrain can generate the 1.0 Deep North content when you visit it after updating.

Previously explored northern terrain is the problem. If you sailed through the placeholder Deep North before 1.0, those loaded areas do not magically rebuild themselves with new villages, Winding Tunnels, Mörkhalla structures and other locations.

Do you need to start a new world?

No, but Iron Gate recommends it for the cleanest 1.0 experience. Use Your Old World in Valheim 1.0 only if you accept that a fresh seed guarantees the final biome is generated using the current world rules instead of working around chunks loaded by an older version.

A new playthrough also lets you experience the complete progression and new cinematics naturally instead of dropping straight into endgame systems with a character that already owns everything from Ashlands.

What happens to achievements on an old save?

Achievements begin tracking from the point you install version 1.0, so old historical actions are not automatically reconstructed.

That means a veteran world can still earn achievements going forward, but some earlier milestones may need to be performed again if the game needs to see the relevant action after the update.

Can you use an old character in a new world?

Yes. Worlds and characters are separate, so one useful compromise is Use Your Old World in Valheim 1.0, or keep your experienced character while generating a fresh 1.0 world.

You can bring skills and carried equipment into the new seed, although doing so obviously skips much of the intended early progression challenge.

What if you already explored the far north?

If a large amount of Deep North terrain was loaded before 1.0, starting a new world is the safest option if you want the full biome layout.

You can still keep Use Your Old World in Valheim 1.0 for your base and memories. Nothing stops you maintaining both saves and using the new world when you want untouched 1.0 generation.

Should a multiplayer server restart?

The same rule applies to servers. If any player explored large sections of the far north before the update, those areas may lack the intended 1.0 content.

Use Your Old World in Valheim 1.0 on a server that kept the north untouched can continue normally. Back up the world before major changes and make sure every player understands whether the group is preserving the old seed or moving to a fresh one.

Old world or new world: which is better?

Use Your Old World in Valheim 1.0 if preserving a major base and getting to the Deep North quickly matters most. Start fresh if you want the cleanest terrain generation and the complete 1.0 journey.

Neither choice is invalid. The only bad assumption is expecting terrain you already explored years ago to regenerate itself just because the game reached version 1.0.

Use Your Old World in Valheim 1.0 if the north remained largely unexplored and you value your existing base more than a completely fresh map.

Use Your Old World in Valheim 1.0 is worth understanding before you move on to the next biome or system.
