Last Epoch Blood and Ice Forging Potential gives Rage of Morditas reward items two different crafting advantages. Ice Forging Potential, earned through a Frozen Ritual, has a chance not to be consumed during crafting. Blood Forging Potential, earned through a Bloody Ritual, increases your chance of a critical crafting success.
Both are useful, but for different reasons. Ice helps you keep potential for later upgrades. Blood improves the chance of getting an extra affix-tier upgrade from a craft. You choose the relevant ritual at the reward crystal, before you ever open the Forge. Here’s how each works and which one suits the item you’re making.
How Last Epoch Blood and Ice Forging Potential works

Complete a Blood Crystal encounter, survive the Gauntlet of Blood and Ice and open the reward board. It starts with four equipment slots and one for materials or resources. You can spend Bloodrage Charges on rewards or on a Ritual that changes the items offered next. The choice also determines whether the new items carry Blood or Ice potential.
| Effect | Blood | Ice |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Bloody Ritual | Frozen Ritual |

How to get Ice Forging Potential
After the fight, choose Frozen Ritual on an item type you want more of. This locks out the selected reward slot, then makes the next rewards match that item type. For equipment, the new rolls also try to have similar affixes. Items created through Frozen carry Ice Forging Potential.
Imagine you’re trying to improve a pair of boots. If an Ice-protected craft preserves Forging Potential, you’ll still have more left for another upgrade than if the potential were consumed. It doesn’t happen every time, but that’s what makes the Ice side of Last Epoch Blood and Ice Forging Potential useful on an item you expect to work on repeatedly.
How to get Blood Forging Potential
Choose Bloody Ritual when the reward board has an item type you want to remove. The selected slot is lost and that item type is excluded from subsequent offers. Items created through Bloody carry Blood Forging Potential, which increases the chance of a critical success when you use the Forge.
Here’s what that means in practice. When you craft with an affix shard, a critical success can upgrade a second affix tier as well as the upgrade you selected, at no extra cost in crafting materials or potential. The bonus tier goes to a random eligible affix and can’t push an affix beyond tier 5. Blood increases the likelihood of that outcome; it doesn’t let you choose which affix gets the bonus.

Which Last Epoch Blood and Ice Forging Potential should you choose?
If you’d rather have more opportunities to craft on the same item, Ice makes sense. If you want a better shot at an extra affix upgrade, Blood is the one to consider. The Last Epoch Blood and Ice Forging Potential choice also depends on the reward you want: Frozen targets an item type, while Bloody excludes one. Read our Bloody vs Frozen Ritual guide before sacrificing a promising slot.
Eleventh Hour Games hasn’t published exact percentages for either special effect in its Rage of Morditas reveal. There’s also no confirmed rule that you can move Blood potential to another item or combine Blood and Ice on one item. Check the actual tooltip in the Forge instead of calculating a supposed guaranteed number of extra crafts.
Do Bloodrage Charges carry over?
No. You can’t bank Bloodrage Charges from one crystal to the next. The reward board stays the same between encounters until you claim something or perform a ritual, so you can come back to a selection you like with freshly earned charges. Each additional ritual removes another slot, leaving you fewer items to choose from.
Patch 1.5.4 added Shift + right-click, or hold X on a focused item, to quick-claim from the Ritual window. That changes how you collect an item, not how Last Epoch Blood and Ice Forging Potential works. Our Rage of Morditas walkthrough explains the encounter and the new reward controls.
Last Epoch Blood and Ice Forging Potential and variant Uniques
Two variant Uniques can appear when the reward board refreshes with all five slots. Using Frozen Ritual on another reward can reroll a variant affix; Bloody Ritual on another reward can give a chance of adding Legendary Potential or corruption. Those are special reward-board outcomes, not the same thing as the Blood and Ice crafting effects.
For Last Epoch Blood and Ice Forging Potential, choose Ice when you want potential to last longer and Blood when you want more chances at a critical crafting success. Neither one replaces a good item base or a sensible set of affixes. Look at the reward slots first, then choose the crafting benefit that suits what you’re trying to make.
