Last Epoch Bloody vs Frozen Ritual is the decision you make at the end of a Rage of Morditas Blood Crystal encounter. Choose Bloody Ritual to remove an unwanted item type from future rewards, or Frozen Ritual to focus the next roll on the type you’ve selected. Both spend a Bloodrage Charge and sacrifice one of the reward slots.
If a two-handed axe is no use to your build, Bloody helps get it out of the reward pool. If you’ve found a promising pair of boots and want more chances at that kind of item, Frozen is the better fit. The catch is that every ritual leaves you with fewer items to choose from, so it’s worth deciding before you click.
Last Epoch Bloody vs Frozen Ritual: differences at a glance

You’ll find both choices at the Blood-Filled Crystal after the gauntlet. The panel starts with five rewards: four equipment slots and a fifth for materials, keys or resource bags. Claiming an item refreshes the offers; using a ritual changes what comes up next. Here’s how Last Epoch Bloody vs Frozen Ritual affects that board.
| Effect | Bloody Ritual | Frozen Ritual |
|---|---|---|
| Selected slot | Removed | Removed |
| Future reward type | Excludes the removed item’s type | Matches the selected item’s type |
| Equipment affixes | No specific matching rule stated | Attempts similar affixes |
| Forging Potential | Blood | Ice |
| Use when | You want to eliminate a type | You want to focus on a type |
When to use Bloody Ritual
Choose Bloody when a slot contains an item type that has no place in your build. Eleventh Hour Games uses a two-handed axe as its example: sacrifice that axe and later rewards won’t be two-handed axes. It’s a useful way to narrow a broad loot pool.
If you’re looking for a wand, removing two-handed axes makes sense, but it doesn’t immediately give you a wand. Bloody is an exclusion tool. In the Last Epoch Bloody vs Frozen Ritual comparison, that’s its biggest advantage over the more targeted Frozen option.
When to use Frozen Ritual
Frozen is for a different situation. Select the slot containing the type of item you want to see again. The next reward roll will use that same item type; if it’s equipment, the new items will also try to have similar affixes. You’re exchanging one current reward for a more focused set of possibilities.
If a pair of boots has the kind of defensive stats you want, Frozen can help you look for more boots with related affixes. It won’t copy the original item or guarantee better values. The easiest way to remember Last Epoch Bloody vs Frozen Ritual is that Bloody excludes an item type while Frozen pursues one.

How many rituals can you do?
Every ritual uses a Bloodrage Charge and closes one slot. You can’t keep using rituals after the available choices are exhausted. Eleventh Hour Games says additional sacrifices tend to improve reward quality, but you’ll be deciding between fewer pieces of loot. Sometimes taking a good item now is the better call.
Bloodrage Charges don’t carry over after an encounter. The reward board does, until you claim something or use a ritual. That lets you come back to an interesting selection after another Blood Crystal, but you’ll need to earn new charges. Our Rage of Morditas walkthrough covers the fight itself.
Last Epoch Bloody vs Frozen Ritual: Forging Potential and uniques
Bloody Ritual rewards have Blood Forging Potential, which raises the chance of a critical crafting success. Frozen Ritual rewards have Ice Forging Potential, which can sometimes be preserved during crafting. Neither effect has a published fixed success percentage. Our Blood and Ice Forging Potential guide explains when each is useful.
The reward board can also roll two special variant Uniques when it refreshes with all five slots. Using Frozen on another slot can reroll a Unique’s variant affix, while Bloody on another slot has a chance to add Legendary Potential or corrupt it. Be careful which slot you’re sacrificing if one of those Uniques is already on your board.
Does patch 1.5.4 change the ritual choice?
Patch 1.5.4, released on 5 November, added quick claim with Shift + right-click or hold X on a focused item. That takes a reward; it doesn’t perform a ritual. Patch 1.5.3 separately fixed a bug preventing Ritual-window items from being gifted to party members. Neither patch changes the Last Epoch Bloody vs Frozen Ritual choice.
Which option should you pick?
Choose Bloody to stop an unwanted item type appearing again. Choose Frozen when you already have an example of the type you’d like more of. Check the remaining slots, the charges you’ve earned and whether the original item is worth claiming before making the sacrifice. That’s the decision that matters, not chasing a supposed guaranteed rarity.
